La statua, alta più di 3 metri, realizzata nel 1883 dallo scultore lombardo Francesco Barzaghi rappresenta Alessandro Manzoni in piedi, in atto di camminare con un'espressione assorta. L'opera in memoria dello scrittore, scomparso 10 anni prima, è eretta proprio in Piazza San Fedele, perché molti sono gli episodi della sua vita legati a questo luogo. Innanzitutto in questa piazza si trova San Fedele, la chiesa frequentata in vita dallo scrittore e dove questi cade procurandosi una lesione che lo porta in seguito alla morte. Di fronte alla chiesa di San Fedele, dove oggi si può vedere la sede di un istituto bancario, si trovava palazzo Imbonati, già sede nel '700 dell'Accademia dei Trasformati. Era di proprietà di Carlo Imbonati, il nobiluomo milanese con cui Giulia Beccaria, la madre di Manzoni, decide di convivere abbandonando il marito. Nel 1808 nel palazzo Imbonati, nel frattempo acquistato dalla famiglia Blondel, si celebrano le nozze - con rito calvinista - tra Alessandro Manzoni e la prima moglie Enrichetta Blondel. Nel 1831 in questa stessa casa vanno ad abitare Giulietta, la primogenita di Manzoni, e suo marito Massimo D'Azeglio. Nel 1872 sul sito di Palazzo Blondel viene costruito il Teatro della Commedia che, alla morte dello scrittore, ne prende il nome. Il primo teatro milanese dedicato ad Alessandro Manzoni. Da non dimenticare che l'autore dei Promessi Sposi, abitava a pochi passi dalla chiesa, in via Del Morone, oggi visitabile e Centro di Studi Manzoniani. Commenti e critiche sempre molto gradite.
