This is Djanghou, a captive, adult male, Western Lowland Gorilla, who resides at Howletts Animal Park (Kent, UK). He was sitting in the shadows of his outdoor enclosure, every once in a while he would lean forward slightly, which allowed the bright sun to light up small features on his face and chest. I underexposed the shot to render the shadows as dark as possible, I then converted to B/W and further darkened the blacks. Howletts is a world leader in it's gorilla breeding and wild reintroduction programme, so my title "Solitary Confinement" was purely for moody narrative purposes. This image reminded me of a (human) prisoner kept in dark "solitary confinement", with a shaft of light to convey the solemn mood of the "prisoner". Djanghou however, is as innocent as they get, he is an incredible animal! I'm sure many of us feel that captive animals (especially complex and intelligent creatures like the Great Apes) are a shadow of what their wild selves should really be!, so this is the idea behind the image (and not a slight on the efforts of the Zoo that this Gorilla lives at), thanks for looking!

Your shot and your description do convey many different feelings to me: astonishment for its beauty, sadness for being a captive subject (not to slight either), appreciation for your technique, impressive!

As soon as I opened the photo I said ... noooo: (
so I guess you're very successful in ..
I hope it's more "theatrical" than real. In each case the image is really impact

Hi ste77, thanks for your comment and concern..........you are correct, this image and the title is more "theatrical than real", but this Gorilla is still very much a captive creature, which is not ideal, especially for intelligent and complex animals like the great apes, but this animal is not an unhappy one (although I do think the spirit of a captive Great Ape is a somewhat broken one). The Zoo where I took this shot is one of the very best in the world for Gorilla care and conservation (including captive to wild reintroductions...which is quite impressive!)............but part of me dislikes to see these incredible creatures in captivity (even if they are supposedly happy and well cared for)......and this is why I took the shot, there is an irony about saying this and actually being at the zoo to take the shot (double standards), so I hope you understand?, all the best
