Col ritorno dei primi tepori tutto riprende vitalità e la natura si desta dal torpore invernale; si riattiva l'impulso biologico della fase riproduttiva, sia nel mondo animale che vegetale. Anche i vecchi larici d'alta montagna di risvegliano e sui loro rami esili e battuti dal vento, compaiono i primi ciuffi di aghi e i fiori, piccoli, esili, che all'escursionista disattento passano inosservati. Ma se ci fermiamo e li guardiamo con attenzione si rimane incantati per la loro bellezza. I larici generano fiori maschili e femminili sulla stessa pianta, si possono notare ambedue sullo stesso ramo particolareggiati nella foto. I fiori femminili sono visibili poiché ovali, allungati e assumono spesso colorazioni rosate, da rosa acceso a rosse. Se impollinati, i fiori femminili generano piccole pigne allungate, che possono raggiungere i 4 cm e possono restare sulla pianta anche per diversi anni. I fiori maschili sono, invece, piccoli e di colore giallo.
