La parola presepe deriva dal latino “Praesepe” che significava letteralmente stalla, mangiatoia e rappresenta una raffigurazione rievocativa e realistica della natività di Gesù. La prima ricostruzione della scena del presepe si attribuisce a S. Francesco nel 1223. La consuetudine di allestire presepi nelle chiese si diffuse nel 1400 a partire dal Regno di Napoli, allargandosi in seguito in tutto il meridione. Intorno al 1500 nasce la cultura del presepe popolare ad opera di S. Gaetano di Thiene il quale diede un decisivo impulso all'ammissione di personaggi secondari vestiti sia secondo le fogge antiche sia dell'epoca a lui coeva. La nascita del “Figurinaio”, cioè del creatore di statuette avviene sotto il regno di Carlo III. La tradizione presepistica siciliana predilige l'utilizzo della terracotta come materiale per la realizzazione di presepi i quali vengono ormai riconosciuti come vere e proprie opere d'arte.
