In quel di Stezzano, una bella chiesa a due passi da Bergamo. Luigi Mossali - All Right Reserved. Con il 1586 iniziò il II periodo della storia del santuario, quello più importante, nel quale si crearono le basi per un rapido sviluppo della chiesa. In quell'anno alla Madonna dei Campi si verificarono una serie di avvenimenti prodigiosi. Nel mese di maggio si vide scaturire una gran quantità di acqua limpida da un pilastro con l'immagine della Vergine e Bambino dipintavi sopra. Il fenomeno non fu momentaneo, ma si verificò fino ai primi di novembre. Subito si poté constatarne l'effetto salutare. Si pensò, sin dai primi giorni, di scavare entro il perimetro della chiesa una cisterna per raccogliere quell'acqua. Poi, in un secondo momento, si fece un'altra cisterna fuori dalla chiesa. L'usanza di bagnarsi con l'acqua del santuario, iniziata in quei giorni, si prolungò poi nel tempo anche dopo che, dal novembre del 1586, la vena si fu prosciugata. Volendo tramandare ai posteri il ricordo di quell'acqua prodigiosa, fu costruita una terza cisterna nell'interno della chiesa, sotto la cantoria, che rimase in uso sino al 1885. Contemporaneamente al prodigio dell'acqua ne avvenne un secondo, ancora più straordinario: l'apparizione della Madonna a più persone, che si erano recate nel santuario, attirate dal fenomeno dell'acqua. Il 12 luglio Bartolomea Bucanelli, di 10 anni circa, disse che, trovandosi nel campo presso la chiesa con Dorotea Battistoni, di 11 anni circa, a pascere le bestie, andò a pregare alla ferrata della finestra e lei e l'amica videro dentro la Madonna, vestita di nero, inginocchiata in mezzo alla chiesa, dove c'era dell'acqua e sembrava leggesse un libro. Nei mesi successivi di agosto e settembre la Madonna apparve di nuovo ad altre persone. Queste apparizioni della Madonna sono state interpretate da tutti coloro che scrissero intorno alle vicende del santuario come il desiderio, da parte della Vergine, di risvegliare nella popolazione di Stezzano e dintorni la fede ormai sopita e di richiamare gli uomini ad una vita più spirituale e di preghiera.
