"Azulejo" è una parola araba usata in Spagna ed in Portogallo per nominare una piastrella di ceramica, vale a dire, una mattonella di terracotta coperta con smalto opaco. In tutti e due i Paesi, a partire dal trecento si registra un uso frequente di azulejos per rivestire e decorare pareti, pavimenti, soffitti e camini. Questa parola deriva dall'arabo "al zulaycha" che significa piccola pietra levigata, e non da "azul" (blù), come spesso viene scritto. Il fatto che ci fossero molti azulejos blù ha creato questa confusione, ma storicamente le prime piastrelle che si osservano in Spagna e in Portogallo sono verdi, marroni e gialle piuttosto che blù.
