La Spezieria (farmacia) alla Scala, a Trastevere è la più antica di Roma, ha aperto nella seconda metà del Cinquecento. In principio i rimedi e le cure della Farmacia della Scala erano dedicate solo ai frati Carmelitani Scalzi che la gestivano. Nel Seicento ha aperto al pubblico dispensando i suoi rimedi in tutta Roma. I frati carmelitani hanno continuato a produrli fino al 1954 con le spezie che coltivavano nel giardino del Convento di Santa Maria della Scala. Una delle pozioni preparate dalla spezieria era la theriaca preparata fino alla metà del secolo scorso. Tra gli altri rimedi della spezieria vi è l'Acqua della Scala, una lavanda antinevralgica usata per le malattie delle prime vie respiratorie, i dolori reumatici e le allergie, l'acqua di melissa, usata come calmante, e l'acqua della Samaritana, un arcaico disinfettante.[1] La fama della farmacia e dei suoi rimedi era così grande che era chiamata anche la "farmacia dei Papi" che, beneficiando dei suoi preparati sin dal tempo di Pio VIII, le concessero molti privilegi. L'antica farmacia, tra le più antiche di Roma, è rimasta identica dal '700. Si conservano gli scaffali settecenteschi, con gli albarelli ancora pieni, mentre rimedi, ricettari ed erbari sono disposti come se la spezieria fosse tuttora attiva. Dell'arredo fanno parte due scritte in latino: ”Né l'erba li guarì né la miscela; sì la tua parola, Signore, la qual sana ogni cosa” e ”Dalla terra l'Altissimo creò i medicamenti: l'uomo prudente non li avrà in dispregio”.
