Il Nilo è il fiume più lungo del nostro pianeta, con una lunghezza totale di 6671 Km. Nasce nell' Altopiano del Burundi, con il nome di Nilo Kagera (precisamente da uno dei suoi rami superiori, il Luvironza). Dopo un breve tratto nel Burundi il fiume entra in Tanzania, successivamente in Rwanda, Uganda e Sudan. Poco prima di entrare in Egitto il fiume si allarga per formare il lago artificiale Nasser, nato con la costruzione della Diga di Assuan, per poi attraversare l'intero Egitto e riversarsi con il delta del Nilo nel Mar Mediterraneo. Grazie al grande fiume, in Egitto la coltivazione della terra conservò sempre una preminenza assoluta e il paese appariva come un unico enorme impianto agricolo, con un altissimo potenziale produttivo. Infatti le economie dei due Egitti si integravano e agli abitanti conveniva organizzarsi in un'unica comunità, estesa da Assuan al Mediterraneo, sia per meglio sfruttare le piene con opere idrauliche, sia perché, con risorse alimentari più vaste, era più facile fronteggiare situazioni di emergenza, come il perdurare da un anno all'altro della scarsità d'acqua. Dal Nilo dipendevano anche la ricca flora spontanea e la numerosa fauna, e quindi la caccia e la pesca. Tutto questo non sarebbe stato possibile senza la grande inondazione del fiume che gli dei benefici concedevano al paese con la regolarità di un prodigio naturale. Ecco perché lo storico greco Erodoto definì efficacemente l'Egitto "dono del Nilo", anche se l'affermazione è falsa ove minimizza il lavoro umano. Da Settembre a Maggio si organizzano dei viaggi sul Nilo in Feluca. L'itinerario classico inizia ad Assuan e termina a Luxor. Sarebbe molto più difficile fare il viaggio nella direzione contraria, perché la feluche si muovono a vela e andando verso sud nella direzione contraria devono risalire la corrente diventando molto più lente. Più volte ho fatto questo tragitto in feluca, ma certamente vi consiglio anche l'altro percorso da Assuan all'Isola Elefantina per visitare i Villaggi Nubiani. Bellissimi.
