Ostana è un piccolo paese di borgate sparse, in posizione panoramica sul versante soleggiato della Valle Po, con vista splendida sul gruppo del Monviso. Nella parte più bassa il fiume Po, appena nato, lambisce il suo territorio. Il modo più semplice per conoscere questo angolo alpino di Occitania è fare il giro completo delle borgate: servono almeno quattro ore di cammino e in inverno è meglio portarsi dietro le racchette da neve. Ovunque si ammirerà la sapienza dell'architettura spontanea che fonde il legno con la pietra e mette alle case un cappello robusto di tetti di lose. Tutto è bello e funzionale, e stringe il cuore vedere l'abbandono di abitazioni e forni comunitari, muri a secco e strade ciottolate, cappelle e piloni votivi. Questa era una montagna popolata, con le grosse lastre di pietra che delimitavano terreni tutti coltivati. Oggi questo immenso patrimonio aspetta di essere sottratto all'oblio. Il nostro percorso può iniziare dal capoluogo La Villo (villa in italiano), sede del Municipio. Da qui, dopo un centinaio di metri, ci s'immette sulla strada comunale che conduce alla borgata Champanho (Ciampagna) tra aceri e frassini e alti muri in pietra a secco. In estate la strada è macchiata dal colore rosa dei garofanini. Superate le poche case dei Marquét (Marchetti) la strada si inoltra in una faggeta, mantenendo sempre la vista sull'imponente piramide del Monviso. Dopo Champanho, superati due fiumiciattoli, si incontrano numerose piante di maggiociondolo, un ramoscello del quale era posto sull'architrave della porta della stalla come segno di augurio. Qui dominano le betulle e i larici, con sottobosco di lamponi e mirtilli. Si oltrepassano altri piccoli nuclei disabitati, finché si arriva alle due borgate di La Ruà (Bernardi) e Miribrart (Sant'Antonio). Quest'ultima è forse la più caratteristica, con le sue case addossate le une alle altre e gli insediamenti stagionali in quota, chiamati le mèire, con i pascoli sospesi tra rupi e valloni. I muri perimetrali delle case di Miribrart, che poco alla volta vengono recuperate (c'è il progetto di crearvi un albergo diffuso e un ecomuseo dell'architettura alpina), conservano spesso la grossa pietra (pèiro dal milezim) su cui è incisa la data di costruzione dell'edificio: ce ne sono anche dei primi dell'Ottocento, ma l'insediamento è di gran lunga più antico. Proseguendo per tornare a La Villo, s'incontra San Bernardo, nella cui chiesetta è stato riportato alla luce un pregevole affresco medievale.
