La “Cattedrale di Notre-Dame”, voluta dal vescovo Maurice de Sully, si trova a Parigi, fu costruita nel XII secolo ed è di stile “gotico francese”. E' dedicata alla Madonna, si trova nel centro di Parigi ed è una delle chiese gotiche più ammirate e famose in tutto il mondo, massimo luogo di culto francese cattolico. Nel passato, in questo luogo venne prima costruito un tempio dedicato a Giove, poi una basilica cristiana e più tardi ancora una chiesa romanica. La cattedrale venne edificata a partire dal 1163, durante il regno di Luigi VII detto il Giovane, per volontà del vescovo Maurice de Sully, che per realizzare questo suo progetto fece demolire la precedente cattedrale. La costruzione fu avviata partendo dal coro che fu ultimato nel 1182, poi vennero realizzate navate fra il 1182 e il 1190, cui fece seguito un'interruzione nei lavori. Nel 1225 fu ultimata la navata e a partire dal 1208 si diede inizio alla costruzione della facciata, con la realizzazione dei tre portali occidentali e del rosone. La facciata venne terminata nel 1250 e nel periodo 1225-1250 vennero portate a termine anche le torri campanarie. Nel XIII secolo venne prolungato il transetto, prima verso nord e poi verso sud, intorno al 1250 vennero aggiunte delle cappelle alla navata e tra la fine del XIII secolo e nei primi tre decenni del secolo successivo, anche all'abside. La cattedrale venne danneggiata dagli Ugonotti nel 1548, e durante la Rivoluzione francese (fine XVIII secolo) molti dei tesori presenti furono distrutti o portati via. Ritornò ad essere luogo di culto solo in seguito all'incoronazione di Napoleone come Imperatore dei francesi. Nei primi anni del XIX secolo Notre-Dame risultava essere in pessime condizioni, così venne iniziata una raccolta fondi per i necessari restauri che, durarono per ben 23 anni. All'esterno, la facciata, è suddivisa in tre livelli. Nel primo : compaiono tre portali di notevoli dimensioni, quello centrale più grande, chiamato il Portale del Giudizio Universale e due portali laterali più piccoli: il Portale di Sant'Anna a sud e il Portale della Vergine a nord. Nel secondo livello si trova una grande rosa, di diametro 9,6 metri, realizzata con vetrate policrome nei primi decenni del XIII secolo, e appoggiata su una balaustra, proprio davanti ad essa, è presente una statua della Vergine Maria con il Bambino, affiancata da due angeli. Nella parte superiore del rosone si trova la Galleria delle Chimere e in quella sottostante la Galleria dei Re. Infine l'ultimo livello è costituito dalle due Torri Gemelle alte 69 metri.
