in alternativa potrebbe essere interessante far sprofondare buona parte nel buio e cercare (valorizzare) un ultimo chiarore magari sul solo tronco in primo piano, o solo sulle cime degli alberi se toccate dagli ultimi raggi, o non so...

detto questo, provo a tracciare la "genesi" (parolone! ) che ha portato al risultato. la giornata era una di quelle classiche estive da cielo coperto, plumbeo, molto umida e afosa, una di quelle giornate da "apocalisse imminente" per intenderci, quando il cielo soprattutto al tramonto assume quelle tipiche tonalità gialle e molto sature (si nota bene in particolare sullo sfondo a sinistra: la zona sfalciata era l'unica senza copertura arborea e filtrava ancora un bel pò di questa luce particolare. l'aspetto molto "caldo" dello sfondo è dovuto a questa situazione di luce, in post per lo sfondo oltre a sottoesporre parecchio altro non ho fatto. ad esempio la paglia in primo piano posso assicurarti che la vedevo esattamente così

per ciò che riguarda questo invece non ti nascondo che l'intento iniziale era esattamente quello che hai descritto: lasciare lo sfondo molto più buio e rendere "indovinabili" sono alcuni piccoli particolari (il tronco in primo piano, il masso a destra a metà immagine, la linea dello sfondo) ma dopo aver provato non mi piaceva per nulla il risultato: le lucciole non erano "ambientate", non so come spiegarmi, ma il tutto mi dava l'idea di essere poco "coinvolgente". 
alla fine ho optato per questa soluzione perchè era quella che mi trasmetteva meglio l'istantanea del momento ma come detto ovviamente mi riservo di continuare a sperimentare (l'anno prossimo )
