Per la cugina Alda di novantotto anni è sempre stato un intimo tormento sapere che molte delle sue castagne, cadendo sulla carrozzabile che conduceva in paese, quasi inevitabilmente venivano schiacciate dalle ruote delle poche auto che transitavano da quelle parti… soprattutto quando i soliti compaesani avvallavano in mattinata per andare a lavorare nelle fonderie giù in valle… in questo modo diventava una routine giornaliera recarsi con sua sorella sotto i propri castagni la mattina presto e di pomeriggio, per anticipare e salvare questo benedetto frutto dalle impietose ruote pressa-castagne. Il valore dato a questo frutto era davvero importante, tanto da denominarlo “il pane dei poveri”… e non nascondo una certa nostalgia quando da piccino mi rimpinzavo a colazione con castagne secche bollite e latte appena munto. Alcuni di noi, dopo aver riempito il solaio per l'essiccatura e fatto scorta per il maiale… vendevano anche i frutti più belli, giù in valle, il giorno del mercato… il più delle volte per poche lire, soprattutto a chi non conosceva certo il dolore delle spine… conficcate in mani di pietra, temprate dal duro lavoro contadino… Ancora oggi, quando giunge puntuale questa stagione, Alda mi domanda sempre se le sue castagne sono già cadute sui prati vestiti d'autunno o sulla strada maestra… vorrebbe recarsi per raccoglierne un po' e per assaggiarle ancora una volta, soprattutto il “giorno dei Morti”, come da tradizione, anche perché mi rammenta con un certo rigore che le castagne sono un toccasana per la nostra cagionevole salute. Così Alda, sorridendo a modo suo, mi ricorda che ai “suoi tempi”, in autunno, di gente malata non ce n'era… Quando le proferisco per l'ennesima volta che i suoi vetusti castagni sono stati tagliati tempo fa per proteggere la stessa carrozzabile dalla caduta di rami secchi e per salvaguardare le linee ad alta tensione… smorza il suo innocente sorriso, la poca felicità, il ricordo… colmando i suoi occhi grigio azzurro di quell'intima afflizione che mi ricorda tanto la delicatezza della rugiada mattutina…
