Costruita in poco più di due anni, dal 1887 al 1889 (in 2 anni, 2 mesi e 5 giorni) per l'esposizione universale del 1889, che si tenne a Parigi per celebrare il centenario della Rivoluzione francese, prende il nome dal suo progettista, l'ingegnere Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. La struttura, che con i suoi 324 m è la più alta di Parigi, venne inaugurata il 31 marzo del 1889 e fu aperta ufficialmente il 6 maggio dello stesso anno, dopo appena due anni, due mesi e cinque giorni di lavori. Nel 1909 la Torre Eiffel rischiò di essere demolita perché contestata dall'élite artistica e letteraria della città, ma fu risparmiata solamente perché si rivelò una piattaforma ideale per le antenne di trasmissione necessarie alla nuova scienza della radiotelegrafia. Nel 2006 è stata al nono posto tra i siti più visitati della Francia, ed è il monumento a pagamento più frequentato del mondo con 6 893 000 visitatori nel 2007.[1] Dalla sua apertura, nel 1889, è stata visitata da circa 250 milioni di persone.[2] Dal 1964 è classificata come Monumento storico di Francia.[3] La sua manutenzione, dal 1981 al 2005, è stata curata dalla Societé Nouvelle d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SNETE). Dal 2006 al 2014 essa è affidata alla Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE). Il monumento ha mantenuto il record di costruzione più alta del mondo fino al 1930, anno in cui fu completato il Chrysler Building di New York. Per salire fino in cima vi sono due possibilità: i 1665 scalini oppure due ascensori trasparenti. La struttura è divisa in tre livelli aperti al pubblico, raggiungibili sia con l'ascensore sia con le scale. I meccanismi degli ascensori sono quelli originali del 1889 e percorrono, all'anno, 100,000 km. A sud-est della torre si allunga una distesa erbosa da cui un tempo partivano i primi voli in mongolfiera. Quando fu costruita, si registrò una certa resistenza da parte del pubblico, in quanto si pensava che sarebbe stata una struttura poco valida esteticamente (ancor oggi è poco apprezzata da alcuni parigini, che la chiamano "l'asparago di ferro"). Tuttavia è generalmente considerata uno degli esempi di arte in architettura più straordinari e costituisce indiscutibilmente uno dei simboli di Parigi più rappresentativi nel mondo, proposta per le sette meraviglie del mondo moderno. Al terzo livello Gustave Eiffel aveva creato un appartamento in cui riceveva gli ospiti più illustri; oggi vi si trovano le statue di Eiffel insieme a Thomas Edison e alla figlia Claire durante l'incontro avvenuto durante la Fiera Mondiale del 1889 in cui Edison portò un esemplare di Fonografo.
