Lo Sri Lanka è un sistema complesso dove animali e uomini di etnie, culture e religioni differenti, hanno imparato a convivere con non poche difficoltà trovando una propria collocazione, un proprio ruolo in un difficile equilibrio. Uno degli incontri più incredibili che si può fare è quello con le tribù dei Vedda, che sembrano gli unici abitanti dell'isola a non riuscire trovare posto in questo sistema. I Vedda sono considerati gli abitanti originari dell'isola, geneticamente imparentati con gli Aborigeni dell'Australia.La loro storia nello Sri Lanka ha radici che vanno oltre i 20000 anni di lotte battaglie e sconfitte. Il loro racconto è emblematico e si aggiunge a quella folta schiera di popolazioni native ed indigene espropriate dei propri territori. Sin dall'arrivo dei popoli di origine Tamil e Singalese dalla penisola Indiana la popolazione per poter continuare le proprie tradizioni si è ritirata nelle zone più remote del paese, giungle e altipiani spostandosi di conseguenza a seconda delle zone di influenza e dei flussi migratori dei suoi nuovi abitanti. Oggi ci sono tre grandi comunità, una presso la città antica di Anuradhapura, l'altra presso il villaggio di Danbana nella provincia di Badulla e la terza presso la città della costa orientale di Trincomalee. Tutt'oggi i Vedda vivono secondo i culti animisti con qualche mediazione tra culti buddisti ed induisti a seconda della zona d'influenza. Non hanno una lingua scritta o un alfabeto e tutto viene tramandato attraverso il racconto orale. Solo una piccola percentuale di loro parla il cingalese o il tamil e il rifiuto di tecnologie come l'elettricità e il gas li rende in fortissimo contrasto con tutte le civiltà che distano pochissimi km da loro. Nei milleni i Vedda hanno sempre vissuto di Caccia/pesca nei fiumi e raccolta di frutti nelle foreste, ma ora queste pratiche sono vietate per preservare fauna e flora essendo i vedda vicini a molti dei famosissimi parchi nazionali. Difficilmente viene offerto o dato loro lavoro e ancora meno probabile che avvengano matrimoni misti poichè un figlio con un cognome che contiene un nome di origine vedda porta con se un disonore. Questa difficile situazione pone questa etnia in una condizione di non poter vivere nè secondo i loro costumi(soprattutto caccia e pesca) nè secondo i nostri rendendo la loro esistenza quasi impossibile. #Sguardi
