Subjects : Like the other Namibian national parks, the Dorob National Park has a very large territory and includes the coastal strip from Walvis Bay down to the Ugab River bed in Damaraland, enclosing a large land like Portugal. I only visited the coastal desert north of Swakopmund and the area called Moon Desert in the immediate hinterland. Despite having visited a small portion, there are a lot of reasons for interest. The coastal dunes, due to the humidity of the sea, are rich in life and can be seen from the sand gecko (Pachydactylus ranges), the Namib Viper (Bitis peringueyi), the Namib Chameleon (Chamaeleo namaquensis), the Scunco della Sands (Typhlocontias breviceps), lizard-shaped lizard (Meroles anchietae), dune spider (Leucorchestris arenicola), numerous beetles, the ants of the namib. As far as birdlife is concerned, it is easy to see the Namib Desert whitewater more obviously all the coastal birds already described on the page that speaks of Walvis Bay. In the rocky part called "moon desert", it is the flora to make it a master, With the possibility to see one of Namib's desert plant symbols: Welwitschia mirabilis. Also interesting are the "ice plant" (Mesembryanthemum guerichianum), Lithops stone plants, aloe and helicopter blossoms. As for the macrofauna you can surely see the ubiquitous ori, springbok and with a little more luck the jackals. Both the coastal desert and the Moon desert are beautiful views too (so to give an idea we were shot the third episode of Mad Max).

Recommended equipment : For the desert fauna, as well as for the particulars of the flora, a 105 macro is optimal. Due to the hardness of the light it would be good to be able to use the speaker panels as well. For panoramas it's a 24-70mm fine. It would not be bad even to have a wide-angle macro to try and make some settings.

Best months : I was in early June, I think they are avoiding the hottest months.

How to get there : The town of Swakopmund offers a great base of support, with the possibility of sleeping in beautiful structures.

Visits : To access the jeeps on trails crossing the areas of interest, you certainly want permissions. We have made use of the excellent support of a local guide that has also found us on most subjects (Livingdesertnamibia).
