Il lago Baikal è un luogo unico al mondo. Si allunga per 636 chilometri da nord a sud con una larghezza massima di 79 chilometri e una profondità massima di 1642 metri, che lo rendono il lago più profondo al mondo, contenente il 20% circa delle riserve d'acqua dolce del pianeta.
In inverno, quando la temperatura può scendere fino a -40 °C, il lago offre uno spettacolo incredibile e affascinante: per diversi mesi è uniformemente coperto da uno strato di ghiaccio il cui spessore varia da 50 centimetri a un metro e mezzo, il che rende possibile percorrerlo in auto o con altri mezzi pesanti raggiungendo le sue isole e accorciando le distanze tra una costa e l'altra.
Dal 1996 il lago Baikal fa parte del patrimonio mondiale dell'umanità tutelato dall'UNESCO.
