La Valtellina, per la sua posizione strategica tra l'Italia e l'Europa centrale, nel passato fu terra di castelli e fortezze. Tra questi merita menzione il Castello de Piro al Il Castel Grumelloprende nome del dosso roccioso (“grumo”) sul quale fu edificato.
La costruzione avvenne tra la fine del XIII e l'inizio del XIV secolo a opera del ghibellino Corrado de Piro, la cui famiglia si era trasferita in Valtellina in seguito alle lotte di fazione tra Milano e Como. Intorno alla metà del Trecento, i de Piro andarono incontro a un rapido declino che li costrinse a vendere Grumello ai loro rivali, i Capitanei. L'edificio fu infine distrutto nel 1526 per mano delle Leghe Grigie, seguendo così la sorte di molti altri fortilizi valtellinesi.
Castel Grumello rappresenta un imperdibile esempio di castello “gemino”, composto da due corpi, uno militare e uno residenziale, circondati da mura. Il corpo militare, situato a oriente,svolgeva una funzione difensiva e di avvistamento, come testimoniano l'imponente torre a pianta quadrata e le fondamenta di una seconda torre.
