“ La foto mostra la Terra vista attraverso i finestrini della capsula Orion: in alto si vede la grande distesa bruna dell’Africa settentrionale, con uno scorcio dell’Europa (in particolare Spagna e Portogallo), e in basso (a ore 4) c’è l’Antartide. Ma la caratteristica più straordinaria di questa foto non è immediatamente evidente. È scattata mentre nell’emisfero inquadrato è notte.

La luce che illumina la Terra è quella della Luna piena. La fotocamera, una Nikon D5, è regolata con una sensibilità altissima (51200 ISO) e un tempo di posa piuttosto lungo (1/4 di secondo). Una foto del genere, ai tempi delle missioni Apollo, sarebbe stata impossibile da scattare.

È per questo motivo che si vedono le stelle e lungo i bordi della Terra si vedono il chiarore dell’atmosfera, il verde delle aurore polari e il bianco abbagliante della luce solare diffusa dall’atmosfera (in questa foto il Sole sta dietro la Terra e quella falce luminosa è la zona in cui c’è il tramonto). Per la stessa ragione sui continenti brillano delle luci: sono quelle delle città. La chiazza bianca al centro è un riflesso di una luce di bordo sul finestrino.

L’immagine è stata scattata il 3 aprile 2026 alle 00:27:39, dopo aver completato l’accensione TLI che ha lanciato Orion verso la Luna, secondo i dati EXIF pubblicati. Non so quale sia il fuso orario sul quale è impostata la fotocamera. „
