A few days ago I tested the new Sony A7r III and the Sony 24-105. Below a summary of things that have impressed me the most; it is not meant to be an in-depth review, but it is a list of the features that I have really liked.
Image quality
The image quality of its predecessor was exceptional, but this one is even better. Same resolution, but a bit more dynamic range and a bit less noise at high ISO. Minor improvements, which always come very welcome! The result is the best image quality that you can currently find on a 24x36mm full frame sensor.
Speed and autofocus
It does not have the 20 FPS of the A9 but the Sony A7r III is still pretty good, 10 FPS and a really fast autofocus. Nowadays the "mirrorless with slow AF" belong to the past, the last generation of ML has nothing to envy to the SLRs. This improvement on the speed makes the Sony A7r III a camera that can be used 360 degrees; it is no longer a 'landscape camera', it is also very good for sport and wildlife.

Camera Body and menus
The body is similar to the A9, therefore more ergonomic than the Sony A7r II. The menu has many options, but it is well organized and easy to navigate, and even the buttons have been improved. The only missing things are the back-illuminated buttons, something which I would have really appreciated to find.
Battery
The new NP-FZ100 battery has twice the capacity and autonomy of its predecessor, another very welcome improvement.
USB-C
Finally a brand understands times are changed! USB-C allows faster data transfer, charging via the new USB standard (already adopted in most smarthphones and many devices) and it has a symmetric connector, easier to use.

Sony 24-105
I suspect that many of those who buy the A7rIII will also buy this lens :-) I already had a good impression from the tests that I red online but after I trying it personally I can say: it's spectacular! Sony has truly made a masterpiece, the sharpness is excellent from angle to angle to even wide open, even on the 42-megapixel sensor. The AF is fast and silent, and the range of focal length is extremely versatile. If we add the weight (660 grams) and the reasonable price, I would say that this lens is a must-buy.
Bonus: it also has excellent macro capabilities, reaching a 1:3 macro ratio, much better than 1:4 or 1:5 of most standard zoom. It's not the 1:1 of true macros, but it already very good for many macro subjects. |
