Very interesting, few month ago in the Italian section there was a user asking for that kind of solution. 2Kg is not too much for cover all the energy needs, specially if you have no choice and want to avoid the compromise of taking less photo
Do understand this correctly: You manage to charge "2-3 camera batteries, 8 AA or AAA batteries, a lithium battery for a flashlight and the satellite phone" after exposing the solar panel for 3 to 4 hours to the african sun (and that even with the storage battery in between)?
That. Is. Awesome. I thought that you would need a much heavier equipment to achive that - and a much more expensive one as well. Good to know. There might be a tad more rain here in New Zealand but still, being able to charge the torch and the camera batteries...
First the 24-70 MkII and now this - I guess I have do discuss the family finances with my wife...
I am sorry to answer so late: I didn't receive automatic notifications and have missed your replies/questions.
The solar panel charges the storage battery - sometimes also called "power tank" - under the sun. It needs about 3 hours at perfect sun conditions - i.e. cloudless sky, no shadow falling at the solar panel, etc. - to be fully charged. It may take longer if the weather is worse. The devices are charged from this storage battery. Of course, each device and battery has different charging time.
Tomasino, I have almost completed the report of this trip. I will post the address of it here in the next days.
Actually, I can prove that portable solar charger will supply your camera with energy. Of course, if it is under direct sunlight during 2-3 hours. I have worked with different sun chargers and modern ones are quite efficient.
