I have just purchased the Tamron 150-600. When using this lens on a tripod, do you turn the image stabilizer off? I seem to get better images when I do.

I think it would depend on your SS if i can get 1/800 with my 200-400vr i turn it off this is what Nikon say about VR Longer focal length lenses tend to have a Vibration Reduction (VR) function to compensate for image blur caused by camera shake. The function is built into the lens itself and is not camera dependent. When VR is not used a fast shutter speed is required to prevent image blur. When VR is active, slower shutter speeds can be used to produce an image without blur. The effectiveness of the VR function is measured in terms of how many shutter speed 'stops' advantage VR provides over normal use without VR

Thanks for the comment, Rob149bm. My problem is not when I use high shutter speeds, but when I am forced to use slow shutter speeds. I use a Gitzo GT3530LS tripod and even use a 2-second timer when the subject is stationary. Even doing this, my sharpest images seem to be when I turn off the image stabilizer. I thought I remember that some manufacturers recommend not using IS when using a sturdy tripod. Since the Tamron 150-600 came with little information, I am wondering if this is a lens that works better with IS off when used with a tripod. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem with the Tamron 150-600.

Hi John i talked to 2 people that have this lens and one never uses IS when on a tripod and that is what Tamron recomend and has a lot of problem with this lens if it gets warm and that would be a problem here as it often gets to 40 degrees in the summer he thinks he should have got the 4005.6 lens and next year canon will update this lens with 4 stops of IS but it will cost a lot more, the other guy uses IS in low light when on his tripod and gets good results i think it may depend on the copty of the lens you get one of our better bird shooters has gone from nikon over to canon with 7dmark2 and the new 100-400 and getting great results but is a lot younger than we are witch is a big help i give you a link to his web site worth a look

Rob,
Thanks for the reply. I am now using IS in low light with good results. (Perhaps my technique has improved.) I have had no problems with the lens in warm weather. I also have a 400/5.6 which I have used for years. The quality is excellent, but the Tamron is giving me images that are almost as good with the added flexibility of a zoom lens. I will keep the Tamron. Thanks again for the feedback!
