Oppure ovviamente se non vuoi spendere i dindi necessari per l'IS II, c'è ovviamente la "quarta via", ossia cercare un esemplare ben tenuto del venerabile 80-200 F2.8 che come qualità dell'ottica è secondo solo all'IS II, ma ovviamente ha dalla sua tutta una serie di problematiche (velocità o meglio lentezza dell'AF in primis, sicuramente non è troppo adatto a farci sport/azione).
Ho trovato questo vecchio post su DPR che secondo me riassume piuttosto bene le differenze con gli immediati due successori:

"I just sold my 80~200 after owning it for 17 years. I tested the lens extensively against 3 samples of the 70~200 non IS but never upgraded because none were are sharp. The IS version is known to be a little softer than the non IS version so I can only assume the 80~200 would be noticeably sharper than the 70~200 IS which seems to be consistent with the many tests I've read. Here are a few things to consider.
Extenders:
The 80~200 does not accept Canon extenders as it has a flush rear element. This was a design requirement for the 70~200 but it compressed the optics to provide the necessary rear element relief for the Canon extenders (overall length of the two are similar). This may have been the trade-off that was cause for the 70~200 to lose a bit on IQ. Third party extenders will work with the 80~200.
Minimum focus difference:
I believe the 70~200 improved on this by about 2 or 3 feet compared to the 80~200.
USM vs AFD:
The 80~200 uses the old AFD (arc form drive) AF motor. It's slower and noisier than USM and does not allow FTM (full time manual focusing). You have to change the position of the focus switch to use manual focus on the 80~200.
Peripheral brightness:
The 80~200 suffered from significant loss of peripheral brightness (light fall-off) in the mid focal lengths. This was addressed on the 70~200 by increasing the diameter of the lens barrel and front element (77mm vs 72mm). You'll only notice the fall-off on full frame or film cameras and even then it is relatively easy to fix in software.
Sharpness:
The 80~200 is extremely sharp and compares well even with the 200 f2.8L prime. The 70~200 has a noticeable loss of sharpness especially at 200mm which is not as pronounced with the 80~200 (most zooms are weakest at their longest FL). I could discern an advantage for the 80~200 on Fuji Veliva film at every FL and aperture.
Color:
The 80~200 is neutral to warm whereas the 70~200 non IS is cold (magenta). This was obvious looking a frames from both on the same roll of Fuji Velvia on a temperature corrected light table. I don't know if the IS version is the same as the non-IS.
That said I just sold my 80~200 simply because it has been sitting in my closet for years. I now use the 70~200f4LIS and the 70~300DO. I don't find the need for f2.8 speed in my style of shooting and the size and weight of f2.8 lenses have become something I don't care to deal with when travelling." „ |

Comunque vendere un 70 200 isii non mi pare così semplice. Cene sono una marea in giro. Lo producono da 11 anni. Tra privati uno dei primi esemplari non può essere venduto a più di 8/900 euro. |

Infatti l'IS ll è un obiettivo che ha avuto un bel successo commerciale.
In sostanza ha un unico difetto: è meno telecentrico sia del 135/2 L che dei 70-200/4 la qual cosa fa si che esso risulti superiore ai suoi competitori su sensori non molto densi, diciamo fino a 30 mega o poco più mentre finisce per pagare pegno, soprattutto nei confronti del fisso, sui sensori da 50 mega e oltre.
Ovviamente su pellicola (dove poi mi interessa) che per sua stessa natura se ne frega altamente della telecentricità, il 70-200/2,8 gioca in un campionato a parte, decisamente  |

ora la questione si fa spinosa: spendere 500 euro per il 70 200 liscio o 900 per lo stabilizzato seconda serie e abbandonare il 135 ..... E' dura. |

Allora direi il primo 70-200, tanto l'IS ce l'hanno i tuoi corpi macchina e poi se, come credo, la risoluzione dei tuoi sensori Sony supera i quaranta megapixels la scarsa telecentricità dell'IS ll non ti permette di sfruttare al meglio i bordi  |

Ho avuto il 70-200 2.8 ISII, paragonabile a lenti fisse, ho a casa ingrandimenti 50x60 di scatti con questa lente, eccezionale…..mi fece vendere il 135L.
AF rapidissimo e preciso, ci ho fatto scatti a 200mm ad 1/30. Insomma su Canon un must have. Tiene bene i duplicatori.
L'ho vendetti perché sulle prime Sony non andava.

Paolo, la A73 ha 24 mpx. Devo dire che mi sembra superiore il 70 200 is 2. A 850 si può trovare e credo che sia la soluzione più sensata oggi. |

Eh non lo sapevo Tiber, non conosco affatto il mondo Sony, francamente conosco poco anche il mondo Canon digitale  insomma pensavo che le tue fossero macchine da 40/45 mega.
Comunque su 24 mega non c'è neppure il problema della scarsa telecentricità, per cui visto che l'IS ll è parecchio avanti al non IS prendilo tranquillamente... a 850 € poi è assolutamente regalato! |

Beh Mickey anch'io ho venduto il 135/2 L.
Solo che non ho aspettato di avere lo zoom per vendere il fisso... conoscendo l'IS II il 135 l'ho venduto per monetizzare |

Sono possessore del 70-200 1is e devo dire che ne ero contento, però non soddisfatto per cui in vendita,anche perchè ho fatto spesa pazza con un Leitz quasi pari focale e non c'è storia se non l'AF. Il confronto l'ho fatto anche alle singole pari focali da cui 70 vs 77 PK--100 vs 100 Leica--135vs leica --200vs 180leica.Non sto elencando le ottiche che ho ma proprio perchè il CANON a mio avviso non sta alla pari degli altri. |

Ragazzi ma lo schema ottico della versione Is,rispetto alla versione Is ii, cosa cambia? E soprattutto qualcuno ha un paragone su EOS r per quello che è l af?

Quattro lenti UD contro cinque UD e una in Fluorite.
In definitiva?
L'IS ll è decisamente superiore al primo IS.
