Problemi AF con Canon ef-s 17-55 f2.8

Ciao a tutti,
improvvisamente e senza apparente spiegazione alcuna, dopo averlo tirato fuori dalla sua custodia dopo un paio di settimane di non utilizzo, ho iniziato ad avere problemi a raggiungere la messa a fuoco in auto col mio EF-S 17-55 che monto su 700D. Premetto che l'obiettivo è stato acquistato usato tempo fa, ben tenuto e già mi ha regalato dei begli scatti. Facendo delle prove, ho notato che il problema si presenta a tutte le aperture di diaframma ed è poco rilevante a 17mm e per soggetti all'infinito o molto vicini. Appena do invece un po' di zoom e cerco di mettere a fuoco soggetti a distanza normale, non riesco a raggiungere la messa a fuoco neanche a pregare ed l'indicatore sulla scala delle distanze inizia a ballare avanti ed indietro tra 1 e 3m. E' partito l'USM?

Mi rendo conto che da queste informazioni magari non sia semplice fare una diagnosi e che comunque converrebbe portarlo in assistenza, ma mi piacerebbe sapere se a qualcuno di voi è successa la stessa cosa, se ha idea di quale possa essere il problema e se ha risolto, quanto potrebbe costare in linea di massima uno scherzetto del genere.
