Per curiosità, perché hai escluso il Tamron 17-50 stabilizzato?
Volendo ci sarebbe anche il Sigma 17-50 di cui non parlano male (se becchi l'esemplare che lato autofocus si accoppia bene con il tuo corpo macchina).
Comunque con il 17-55 non sbagli, solo spendi un po' di più.

Non so risponderti, non ho più la 40D dal 2013 e non ho mai usato l'auto ISO con nessuna fotocamera.
Hai il manuale?
Se non ce l'hai dovrebbe essere scaricabile dal sito Canon.

Perché per quanto ho capito non va molto distante dal sigma
Anche se non avrei bisogno di tutta sta qualitá per le foto.. Piú che altro é per colmare un buco che verrebbe usato.. Ma non pretendo chissá che qualitá
Ma vabbé, andró su un 17-55 se tutti mi dite cosí

La 40d è stato un dei primi corpi con la funzione AutoISO ed era una funzione molto limitata.
Mi sembra che in modalità M imposta 400 fisso (quindi inutile), mentre in P - Av - Tv imposta in automatico da 400 a 800.

Ho il 17-55/2.8 IS, è una FAVOLA. Vai tranquillo..
