I test mtf sono una misura oggettiva, ma valutano solo alcuni aspetti, e presentano i risultati solo a determinate frequenze spaziali.

Personalmente le differenze tra extender 1.4x II e III le ho notate, già sul primo 100-400: con la versione III le aberrazioni cromatiche erano leggermente inferiori. Dipende anche da quanto spesso si operi in scenari che mettano in luce i limiti ottici degli extender.

Tra 2x e 2x III il salto è abbastanza marcato: oltre a tutto il 2x ha una resa abbastanza scarsa in controluce, in termini di flare, mentre sui modelli successivi hanno rivisto sia la parte ottica che i rivestimenti antiriflesso.

Infine, il 100-400 II è stato progettato successivamente agli extender 1.4x e 2x III, pertanto avranno avuto modo di ottimizzare la resa ottica dell'accoppiata, verosimilmente più di quanto sia stato possibile con ottiche introdotte precedentemente al 2011.
