What do you think? (AF is good to have, but I used manual focus all my life) |

If You have no need in AF, You won't feel a huge difference. Samyang has made this lens very good. Although, Canon 85mm 1,8 is one of the best creations of the entire Canon lens business. A complete must-have. |

I'm Nikon, not Canon but chose the latest G Nikon 85mm f1.8 rather than the faster, but manual focus (manual everything, I believe, with Canon fit) Samyang. Yes, you lose half a stop and the corresponding slight loss of shallow depth of field. But, I do get the latest silent wave motor AF, a highly portable, light lens that is a delight to use, with sensible size filters and sharpness that is already excellent wide open. It will undoubtedly keep its value better too. It's now not a specialist lens but one that is great to use and usable for so many subjects whereas the bigger Samyang might only get used rarely. I'm guessing that Canon's version is similar to that of the Nikon in most aspects, and whilst the specification of the Samyang might appear better on paper, I would suggest you think of the more practical aspects too. Of course, I'd love an 85mm f1.4 at some stage but for the price involved I think the "boring" standard f1.8 is better for most people. Just my opinion and depends on what you want to use it for, of course. I'm certainly not against Samyang, I use regularly their 8mm f3.5 fisheye for DX because it is certainly up to the task and much cheaper (half the price) of a Nikon or Sigma equivalent. But AF is almost not necessary on a fisheye where the depth of field is enormous, but an 85mm f1.4 is very much the opposite. |
