che limiti trovi nel tuo attuale obiettivo?

Non conosco ne Canon ne Nikon ne Pentax, ma gli obbiettivi standard servono solo come fermacarte.
Sulla mia A77 avevo lo Zeiss 16-80 (350 euro di ottica usata) ed era una lama.
Sulla A99 ho il SAM 28-75/2,8 (usato 350 euri) ed è ancora di più.
Anche se lo usi "tutti i giorni" o solo occasionalmente, vale veramente la pena, la differenza è tra una banale foto e una bella foto.

Purtroppo credo che sia il tamron 17 50 2.8 che il canon 18 55 stm siano un compromesso. Io l ho risolto comprando il 24 stm e 50 1.8. Ho più qualità ma la praticita sicuramente è minore. Certo col tamron puoi fare un ritratto a 50 e 2.8 con il 18 55 ti trovi a 5.6....quando servono diaframmi più chiusi perché servono anche quelli hai il vantaggio con lo stabilizzatore. Credo sia una partita il cui esito dipende dalle esigenze o abitudini.

anch'io stesso dubbio nel sostituire il 18-55 IS sulla mia 50D.
il 50 1.8 ce l'ho già.
credo che cercherò un 17-50 Canon

Anche secondo me dipende dalle foto che fai.
Se fotografi di notte o con poca luce e a mano libera avere un f/2.8 fisso è un bel vantaggio: con il 17-55, a 50mm, sei costretto come giustamente hanno scritto sopra a scattare a f/5.6, il che equivale ad alzare gli ISO, con conseguente rischio rumore.
Il Tamron 17-50 c'è anche stabilizzato, anche se dicono che sia meno nitido della versione XR Di II LD.
Io mi trovo bene con il 18-55 IS STM e voglio sfruttarlo ancora a fondo, per poi passare direttamente al Tamron 15-30 f/2.8, che usato costa come il Canon 17-55 f/2.8 nuovo ma dovrebbe essere di un altro livello.
