Pros: Excellent construction quality, attractive aesthetics, small, sharp from the center to the edges, good value for money.
Cons: Paraluce not closed and very expensive, a bit of vignetting but nothing serious.
Opinion: I have recently been a happy owner of a Leica M Monochrom Typ246, and as my very first goal, after having already literally fainted for the body machine, I took this Ultron 35mm f2, postponing the appointment for the purchase of the various Leica glasses. I can say that this lens surprised me! it is built very well, all in metal of excellent workmanship, the rings are really well frictioned and fluid, the body is small and therefore makes the body/lens set compact and discreet. The optical quality is very good already at full opening in the center, and then progressively improve from the center to the edges as the diaphragm is closed, I did some tests and I have to say that, from f5.6 to f8 it achieves its best optical performance. Ok, at the opening there is a bit of vignetting, which, in some ways, could also be a plus because it gives the image a very vintage look that I do not mind, in any case, correctable in a click on LR. Surely, the various Leica optics will be better, although, I got to watch a comparison with the respective Summicron 35mm f2 and this Voigtlander comes out with its head held high, winning on the Leica in some respects, in short... as a first optics on an M body I would say that it is really recommended because it has all the cards in order to churn out excellent photographs! another small negative note the paraluce not closed and rather expensive, I on Amazon found a third-party one at the modest amount of 50 euros !! for heaven's sake, equal to the original but dearest. In conclusion, really very good optics and at a good price, I recommend it as 35mm even definitive, if you can't or do not want to sell yourself a kidney for the very expensive optics of the red sticker. |
