Pros: Super compact, very sharp in the center at f/2.5 and with a very good sense of three-dimensionality

Opinion: I've always been an amateur photographer and a Nikonist. I have fun with a Z6II and I bought this Viltrox 40mm f/2.5 in the spring (it goes to keep company with the 85mm 1.8 and the 20mm 2.8 also from the Chinese house). I confess that I often left it in my backpack, but yesterday I mounted it permanently for a ride in Villa Borghese with the intention of squeezing it well. Don't expect the surgical rendering of an S-Line, but perhaps its strong point is precisely this. On the facades and on the marbles the central sharpness is crisp, surprising for the price (paid 110€ on Ali). The detachment of the planes at f/2.5 is clear, even if the blur on complex textures (such as pine branches) is a nervous thread. In direct backlighting it does not go into a black crisis, but it pulls out a rather marked star flare (thanks to the 7 blades), and at full aperture there is a physiological and visible fall of light at the edges. However, if you like street or are looking for a less clinical and more analog look, these limits turn into pure character. One last note on the photos I enclose: they are not the classic flat lab files. I post-produced them with my usual workflow just to show you the final result and the atmosphere that this glass manages to bring out in the field.
