Pros: Aperture, very sharp already at TA, bokeh, build quality, tropicalized, double function button, convenient app for updating / customization, quality / price ratio at the moment unbeatable for the type of product.

Cons: Small things, maybe weight and bulk (but which are not random), 77mm filter, sometimes I was betrayed by the Af on approach (shooting on a7riii it could be the fault of the slightly dated body)

Opinion: I was missing a bright lens on this focal length having the sirui 85mm f1.4 and the tamron 70-180 f2.8 G2 in the kit. Found on amazon used as new, I was lucky enough to get it under 600 which I think allow me to call this lens absolute best buy. Even at full price (999) or considering the prices of other used ones (easily 800-850) I think it is an excellent purchase, based on the needs of the competition including the sigma 35mm f1.2 (new at 1500) and the sony 35mm GM f1.4 (new at a higher price than the sigma and used more reasonable on the 1200). The latter two still win for weight and size, with Sony in first place and Sigma following. However, comparing it with the top of the Sony range, the viltrox is sharper, greater sharpness over the entire frame, a better managed bokeh and more pleasant with the same lights, all at f1.2, against the Sony at f1.4. As for the autofocus, it has always behaved very well in pursuit, the 4 motors are very performing, as explained before there is some flaw in the approach but I'm sure it's the fault of the camera body, being the Sony A7R III now a bit dated. In speed and responsiveness it is at the level of the sony. In terms of sharpness as already explained it does not disappoint, sharp starting from f1.2, it has an extremely creamy and pleasant bokeh, at least in my opinion, plus almost non-existent chromatic aberration. The weight in the long run can be felt but you are rewarded by a considerable build quality, metal body with waterproof and dustproof design. The display may or may not be a sore point. Nice to have, nice as a feature but objectively superfluous. Even the fact that the aperture has a special ring to be controlled but is visible on the display makes it all a bit alienating, I prefer less digitization and more practicality from this point of view. In any case, this display has its own peculiarities such as the fact that by closing / opening the diaphragm, the depth of field is also shown on the screen. However, the double function button is convenient, also useful for locking the aperture ring, as well as the key to make its scrolling declickable and the af-mf pass button. Very practical and convenient application for desktop and mobile, for firmware updates and customization of the lens. Overall, however, I do not find any relevant defects, these are small things or personal preferences, at this rate Sony and Sigma will have a good competition, an extremely valid product from every point of view

Pros: Sharpness already at full aperture, colors, blur rendering, autofocus (but also read the cons) price, construction (except lens hood and transport bag), possibility of customization, interesting display, 2 custom buttons, de-clickable aperture ring. The App on the smartphone is convenient for firmware update and customization. There is also a USB-C port for wired firmware update from PC/MAC.

Cons: Weight and size (compared to an f/1.4 and the Sony GM). For now lighter and more compact than this there is only the second version of the Sigma f/1.2. Low light AF lock for movement towards the camera when approaching, aperture ring cannot be locked, but it can be done by assigning one of the customizable buttons. Lens hood indescribable, bag that can be improved. The App on Macbook is not certified, so you have to go to the privacy settings and choose "open anyway" - The box is excessively large and bulky.

Opinion: I wanted to add this lens to the Sony kit. Having already the GMaster and not being very convinced of the new Sigma, I opted for the Viltrox. The lens has excellent quality and handles well even if it is obviously heavier than the Sony. I am satisfied with it except for a few aspects that I have listed and I wanted to explain better. 1- In subjects approaching rapidly, especially in the last part of the close-up, the AF loses focus, not significantly, but in such a way as to have soft images and not perfectly focused. The problem I encountered is in low light with a poorly lit subject and in strong backlight. These are quite borderline cases, let's say that generally the AF behaves very well, it also hooks the eye well, and follows tracking well without problems. 2-I remember that obviously you can't mount extenders (also because on a 35mm it seems to me a blasphemy) and there is the usual limitation to 15 fps on Sony (but considering the generic use of a 35mm let's say that we can safely pass over it). If you find the lens at a good price, I recommend you get it. It's a really nice lens and it's not a "kinesisata". At least for now I haven't seen any problems, but obviously I've had it for a few days. Please go and see my gallery dedicated to this lens and kindly let me know what you think. https://www.juzaphoto.com/me.php?pg=369606&l=it
