Pros: Compact, sharp, lightning-fast, multiplyable

Cons: None

Opinion: The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro is one of those lenses that manages to surprise you from the very first use. On paper it might seem simply the "light" version of the famous 70-200mm f/2.8, but it is enough to take it to the field to understand that it has a well-defined personality and numerous strengths that make it, for many photographers, an even smarter choice. The first quality that conquers is undoubtedly lightness. Sony has managed to create a telezoom that can be used for hours without fatigue, making it perfect for travel, excursions, events and reports. It is one of those lenses that you like to carry in your backpack and that, precisely for this reason, ends up being used much more often than it happens with heavier lenses. Visually, the quality level is excellent. The sharpness is very high along the entire focal range, already at full aperture, with a detail that easily satisfies even very high resolution sensors such as that of the Sony A7R VI. The contrast is punchy, the color rendition is natural and uniform, and the control of aberrations is impeccable. The result is clean, high-contrast images with consistent quality from the center to the edges of the frame. The autofocus is another of its strengths. Thanks to the latest generation linear motors, focusing is very fast, precise and practically silent, both in photography and in video shooting. Continuous tracking of moving subjects is also extremely reliable, allowing you to take full advantage of the advanced autofocus capabilities of modern Sony cameras. One of the most interesting aspects of this lens, however, is contained in its name: Macro. The 1:2 reproduction ratio opens up much greater creative possibilities than conventional telezooms. Flowers, medium to large insects, details, products and architectural details can be photographed with surprising quality, without necessarily having to resort to a dedicated macro lens. This added versatility also makes it an ideal companion for those who like to alternate between wildlife, landscape and close-up photography during the same photo outing. An apparently secondary detail, but extremely appreciable in everyday use, is the perfect integration with the Sony FE 20-70mm F4. Both share the 72mm filter diameter, allowing you to use the same polarizing, ND or protective filters without having to purchase duplicates. It's a smart design choice that simplifies the kit, reduces costs and makes switching between zooms even more enjoyable during a day of work or travel. The constant f/4 aperture strikes an ideal balance of quality, weight and practicality. In most modern photographic situations, thanks to the excellent high ISO performance of Sony cameras, this choice does not mean any real limitations, while it allows you to benefit from a much more compact and manageable lens than the equivalent f/2.8 versions. Overall, the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 is much more than just a telezoom. It is an extremely versatile lens, capable of delivering top-notch performance in sports photography, portraiture, landscape, reportage and even macro photography. The combination of optical quality, operating speed, low weight and macro functionality makes it one of the most successful lenses in Sony's current range. Combined with the Sony FE 20-70mm F4, it forms an extraordinarily balanced set of lenses: two light, extremely sharp lenses, perfectly complementary and united by the same design philosophy. Together they cover practically every photographic need, from 20 to 200 mm, while maintaining very high performance.

Pros: Versatility, sharpness, macro functionality, portability

Cons: Nobody

Opinion: A fantastic lens, the latest addition to the optical kit. I tested it thoroughly and was really satisfied with it. Crazy sharpness on the whole image already from F4, the very precise autofocus locks on to the subject quickly, clearly it also depends on the camera and with the a6700 it worked perfectly. The low weight makes it comfortable, I used it practically for almost two whole days and I had no problems The macro functionality, although not 1:1, is the thing I particularly appreciated. Summing up it is a flexible and fun tele that is worth every single penny of its price, I recommend it.

Pros: Versatile, well built, compatible with teleconverters, minimum focusing distance, low weight, compact, very responsive and precise AF, remarkable macro despite not having a 1:1 ratio, surprising sharpness already at TA from edge to edge.

Cons: Cost, Lens hood a bit chip "the one of the first version is made better" but anyway it remains firmly in place, bracket for tripod too short.

Opinion: This zoom, in my opinion, has nothing to fear compared to fixed lenses so sharp it is. Already at full aperture and throughout the focal range it is sharp as hell, but the thing that leaves you pleasantly surprised is that the sharpness of the edges is almost the same as that of the image center, both at 70 and 200mm. That said, just to understand immediately, the bokeh is just as good, of course the distance of the subject matters a lot but I must say, as I see it, it is never nervous on the contrary, it is always fine and creamy. As for the macro aspect of this telephoto lens, a dutiful note: the first zoom lens in the world in this category equipped with medium macro functionality over the entire zoom range, and bearing in mind that it does not have a 1:1 ratio like dedicated macro lenses, it allows me to get closer to the subject at a distance of 0.26m at 70mm and at 0.42m at the telephoto focal length of 200mm, which makes a close-up of an insect, flower or anything else really rich in surprising details. The AF is crazy, of course, even the camera body plays its part, I currently use a Sony A7rV, but I can safely say that it is very responsive and extremely precise, for sure it will not disappoint even the most demanding "like me". The only two criticisms, beyond the high price, currently exceeds € 1,800/1,900.00, you could have made an extra effort for the lens hood and make it a little better, it does not have a release button and returns that vision and feeling a little "chip", honestly it clashes a bit with everything else ...., then, even if this last aspect bothers me less than the lens hood, the bracket for attaching the stand is too short, it seems to me a small stump put there just to...! Okay! Let's say that overall and all in all, you can also overlook these small tricks, even if in my opinion they should be said. Ultimately; I am super satisfied with the performance of this fantastic telephoto lens with macro function, and without any reservations or indecision, I highly recommend it!

Pros: Sharpness, focus speed in Macro

Cons: 1:1 macro only with 2x extender

Opinion: As an amateur I can say that it does its job very well, not having tried other Macros I can't express a "total" judgment, but what I see when I shoot is objectively perfect. Unfortunately, with the extender, you start from F8, which is not the best, especially if used in woods or places that are not completely lit, it can be compensated with a tripod, but insects or birds often do not allow it to be used.
