Pros: Excellent sharpness already at full aperture, very uniform rendering over the entire frame, compactness and weight finally consistent with travel use, fast and silent autofocus, professional construction, aperture ring, excellent resistance to flare and aberrations, surprising minimum focusing distance for a wide-angle zoom.
Cons: Very high price, absence of optical stabilization, expensive 82 mm filters, visible vignetting at f/2.8 and distortion to be corrected via software. It is an extremely correct and modern lens, but precisely for this reason it can be less "characterized" than other more personal lenses.
Opinion: The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II is probably one of the most successful wide-angle zooms available today for the Sony system. Compared to the first version, it takes a clear step forward where it is really needed: it is lighter, more compact, more practical and offers a very high level of image quality, with a convincing rendering already at f/2.8 and very solid edges even on demanding sensors. It is a lens that immediately gives the feeling of being designed to work: landscape, reportage, architecture, interiors, events, travel and video. The 16-35mm focal length is one of the most versatile ever: at 16mm it allows wide and immersive perspectives, while at 35mm it can also be used for ambient, street and detail photography. The minimum focusing distance adds an additional creative possibility, because it allows close-up images with a pleasant blur, which is not a given on a zoom of this type. The performance is very "GM II": clean, precise, contrasty, reliable. It is perhaps not the lens to choose if you are looking for a vintage font or a particular imprint; On the other hand, it is perfect for those who want to take home technically impeccable, sharp, easy-to-work and consistent files in every situation. The autofocus is fast and silent, the aperture ring is very comfortable and the construction fully conveys the idea of a professional product. The flaws are there, but they do not change the overall judgment. It costs a lot, is not stabilized and requires the normal software corrections for vignetting and distortion, especially when working in RAW. But, in real-world use, it remains an extraordinarily reliable lens. For those who use Sony full frame and are looking for the best 16-35mm bright without compromise, it is an almost obligatory choice: expensive, yes, but really excellent. |
