Pros: Build; Mechanical quality; close-focus ability; affordability when compared to the competition; solid removable tripod collar. HSM focussing. Image quality from f3.2

Cons: Soft at f2.8, especially at 200mm, but by f3.2 improves dramatically.

Opinion: Originally bought 5 years ago for performance and music photography for my Nikon D700. Lovely lens to use, the fluidity of both zoom and focus perfect. You can focus manually with your thumb whilst zooming at same time! Yet is never loose. After 4 year's usage, only the rubber grips have discoloured slightly and that's the only sign of wear. Rather than true macro, the 1:3 ratio close focussing gets some wonderful wide aperture focus effects on close ups, especially against the light - and from a good distance too. Performance - well, it's not a Nikon, at 3 times the price but apart from not being that great at f2.8 at 200mm, even stopping down to f3.2 really pulls the quality in. At f4-f8 then it is punchy and very sharp, though you will get flare and ghosting when the sun shines directly down the lens barrel. The excellent lenshood helps. If you were buying such a lens new now then optical stabilisation would be a priority, but that later model is obviously more expensive. As it is, I've been able to get down to 1/50 sec at 200mm, which isn't that amazing these days with VR and OS but the beautiful and well balanced handling certainly helps get blur-free shots. I do own Sigma's EX 1.4 teleconverter, which is matched, so shows the amended aperture data etc. But I have not have used this TC very much with this lens, after initial results were a bit disappointing. As a matter of note, I tend to use a Nikkor G 85mm f1.8 for much music and low light shots now instead, as the Sigma is big and a bit slow for very dark and small venues.

Pros: f2.8 fixed, fast AF, excellent construction and finishes, excellent quality/price (used), general color rendering, blurred quality, excellent construction, removable ring without disassembling the optics, wide and fluid rings

Cons: soft at 200 mm at TA (but already closing at ƒ3.3 improves), Front Fucus excessive but resolves with fine adjustment in the car, flare, tripod attachment too short, weight still in the norm.

Opinion: I replaced a Nikon AF-S 70-300G stabilized that I never liked both for the brightness and for the quality with this lens found used in excellent condition. Having read in the various reviews that it is soft at TA and above 100mm I wanted to do several tests before writing my review. Initially I realized that the optics suffered from a strong front focus (corrected with +18); then I photographed my kitten of a few months at home at ƒ2.8 with variable times and focal lengths. I was amazed by the fact that freehand I obtained excellent sharpness (the hairs on the ears very sharp) even with times of 1/125 and focal lengths from 70 to 135mm. Then outdoors I tried zooming in various conditions. I can confirm that there is flare with the sun included in the shot but not exaggerated (easily removed in post); I did not notice softness at 200mm in any case the results compared with the previous Nikon are superior; the auto focus is very fast, very detailed already at f2.8, but from 135mm up it is preferable to close the aperture and already at f3.3 it becomes a decent razor. The color rendering is excellent, tending to be warm (ideal for portraiture or landscaping) however adjustable in post from NEF files. At the moment I have not felt much the lack of the stabilizer even if I have not had the opportunity to test it with low lights. I find it excellent that the overall length does not change as the focal length changes.

Pros: Price, used is found as new around 400 euros. Pro Lens for all intents and purposes even if entry level. Brightness, general chromatic rendering, blurred, sharpness up to 150mm even at TA. Build quality, nice hood, solidity. The Autofocus is a splinter even in low light.

Cons: Lack of stabilizer But there is the newer model and now there is also the Art. Soft at 200 to TA but just close to 3.5 and becomes very usable. F/B Fucus which is a terno to the lot but resolves with fine adjustment. Weight.

Opinion: I bought it again that had come out recently. Mainly used in DX. It cost 750 euros against the approximately 2000 euro of the Nikon Vr II that remains another planet. On my D300 manifested back focus I corrected it satisfactorily with the fine adjustment of the machine. I use it even today with as much satisfaction, but sometimes I feel the lack of the stabilizer with the D300 but I arrange with monopod. With newer sensors with good high-Iso hold, it can still tell its much more than decently. From 70mm to 150mm it is very sharp with a beautiful chromatic rendition. discreetly contained aberrations. Minimum distortion. Over 150mm you have to close a hair otherwise becomes soft, which for someone can be useful in portraits. At the intermediate focal lengths makes it more than decently right on portraits even at TA. At the intermediate diaphragms is a discrete blade. If the lack of stabilizer is not a problem, I would recommend it because it is used in excellent conditions at really low prices and is certainly better than any consumer plasticone not bright.

Pros: construction quality, speed AF, nuts

Cons: soft to TA 200 mm

Opinion: 'A goal that has a good build quality, focus with a good response, smooth rings; but excels in sharpness TA mostly 200 mm, it seems to suffer from the front focus. Instead, in 70-85 - 135-160 is a TA accettabile.rnSinceramente a sharpness not recommend this model, it was better although the former had a maf less reactive and less nuts fluide.rnLe photos are neutral and not very contrasted, compared to Nikon of recent generations, but many prefer photo for more muted colors. Rating: 6.5

Pros: f2.8 fixed aperture, rapid AF, very affordable price, excellent construction and finishes, quality / price

Cons: soft from 100 to 200mm in TA

Opinion: after switching to FF I'm changing kit and I found this lens at a price that I could not leave it where it was. The field trial was amazing, the auto focus is very fast, very detailed already at f2.8, but from 100mm up is better to close the aperture a bit, already at F3.5 cuts like a rasoio.rnmolto satisfied my purchase. version without stabilizer which I think is better than the next
