Pros: One of the sharpest telephotos available, corner to corner. Aperture ring. Lightweight (similar to Sony 100-400). Click stops at 90 degrees on the lens foot.

Cons: Close focus at 3m is a bit too far for hummingbirds. Default foot is too small to use as a handle. My wife stole it from me (but I still get to use it).

Opinion: It does not look plasticky and I haven't found the limit to 15 fps to be a problem (but if you like to shoot at 20+ fps, then you should pass if you use Sony). Sony limiting the speed and blocking the teleconverter use is annoying, but that's a Sony thing. I just makes Sony a bully. This is one of the sharpest telephotos I have ever used. It is sharp wide open, corner to corner, even though that hardly matters for wildlife; the corners are almost never in focus anyway. A remarkable performance. There are no noticeable aberrations. It is very light for what it is, very compact and portable; good for walking around, at least compared to the really big heavy telephotos on the market. Much nicer to fit in a bag and hike with it. I replaced the small foot with one from Hejnar photo to make it useful as a handle. Focusing seems to be as fast and accurate as the Sony lenses. Personally, my only wish is that it focused closer.

Pros: lightness, size, sharpness, AF speed, accuracy, colour, detachment, ease of use, fairly bright, speed and precision MAF

Cons: the limitations imposed by Sony, MAF minimum distance really decidedly limiting.

Opinion: I use it in combination with the Sony A1 for wandering hunting in the mountains, both birds and animals: for this type of use it is absolutely priceless for all the features exposed in the pros. The quality is in my opinion excellent, as confirmed by the best foreign and Italian rating sites, including the excellent article by Juza here on the forum. From the point of view of performance I found it clearly superior to the D500 combo with Tamron 150-600 GII (which is still really excellent in many respects as well as abysmally less expensive and still remains a very valid economic choice) and other combos such as R7 and R5 with RF 100-500 and even with the excellent EF 300 2.8 IS II (even more so if with a 1.4 teleconverter, let's not talk about the 2X) that I owned and sold to pay for the new system. Even with the limitation of not being multipliable (but I find that with the freehand multiplier it is rather difficult to obtain quality results), I absolutely recommend it for those who want to stay light without sacrificing quality, really satisfying. It is also decidedly superior optically and in every other respect to the excellent Sony 200-600 that I own and use with satisfaction. I fully agree with Juza's conclusions: "The Sigma 500mm f/5.6 DG DN OS Sport combines the quality of professional super-telecommunications that now cost between 10000 and 20000 euros with a unique portability and a much more affordable price. The only criticism I can make of it is the minimum focusing distance which is quite long (as on all fixed super-telephoto cameras); a minimum firing distance of 1.5 or 2 meters would have been a huge help for small subjects."

Pros: Optics: Definition, micro-contrast, three-dimensionality, colours - On the pitch: lightness!

Cons: In the Sony version limit to 15 fps and no duplicator. Minimum distance of 3 meters, but accepts extension tubes, even in Sony version, maintaining autofocus

Opinion: Looking for a powerful but light tele, I trusted the review of D.Abbott (which has never disappointed me) and various others. The field test confirms all the good I had read about this lens. Light it is, it weighs like some 70-200, and you tend to forget that it is a 500, agile and well balanced. I have no experience of brighter and much more expensive super-canvases recently, I bought them in the past but now I am no longer in the mood to spend 7,000 or 10,000 euros and more. But I think this Sigma 500 is very close to the high-end performances, and certainly surpasses the "zoomons", including my Sony 200-600, which remains a very good lens, but here there is more: the constant and pleasant impression, from the definition to the colors to the detachment of the planes, of having shot and filmed (I mainly make videos) not with a 500 but with a valid 300 if not a 70-200. This is even more evident in the case of low and/or gray light, where it brings out colors and contrast, something that the Sony 200-600, as is known, struggles to do. I find both autofocus and stabilization more than good. The aperture ring, which is also manual and also declickable for video, is a plus. I reserve the right to try it well with extension tubes as well to see if at close range it maintains good quality. Speaking of tests and reviews, having said that Dustin Abbott and others highlight the high definition already from 5.6, the non-vignetting etc. etc., I wonder what tests they have done instead to "Chasseur d'images" (which now provides the tests to "Tuttifotografi"), which places it inferior to the Sony 200-600 and others: but it is not true, I have both and the comparison leaves no doubt.

Pros: Lightness, sharpness

Cons: Plasticky, looks like a toy

Opinion: It is an ideal lens for those who want quality (obviously not at the levels of its big brother 300/600 remaining in sigma) and portability; hand luggage on the plane, backpack in the mountains... As far as I could see used with Leica SL3, the rendering on the subject offers a very interesting sharpness, perhaps too much!! I tried it against the light and it behaves well, certainly not at the levels of my favorite lens, the 90/280. I put a vote of 8!
