The lens has undergone a slimming cure and a weight distribution that further facilitates its freehand use compared to the amazing 600mm FL. Although for prolonged use it is always better to have a monopod or a tripod, the stray photographic hunt can be done not only for the low weight, but above all for the position of the center of gravity that makes the weight fall on the palm of the left hand. Compared to FL, you immediately notice how the new surface treatments give an edge. Nikon with the new S series lenses has really made remarkable strides. The AF is not felt and has a greater reactivity than the already excellent FL. The use of the built-in TC is easy, the engagement lever is at the right distance for my fingers and, especially on gimball, allows you to frame at 600mm and 'zoom' to 840mm while chasing the selected subject. With a little practice you can also freehand. The yield with the internal CT substantially does not affect the IQ, they look like two lenses with fixed focal length in one. The yield with the external TC14Z compared to the internal TC can be glimpsed on the finer details, while the yield with TC20Z is perceived a little more. Between double TC14 (internal and external) and external TC20Z I prefer the yield with double TC14. However, the quality of the optics makes it more than decent shots even with external TC20Z and internal TC14 inserted. Of the customizable rings, I find the control ring simply perfect in 4k videos to be associated with the electronic zoom function making it possible to go from 600mm to 1680mm with an excellent ease and progression. The carbon hood has undergone a slimming cure and the thickness is now really minimal, it flexes easily under the pressure of the fingers.
