Pros: Tiny 'pancake' lens, Sharpness from f2.8 on, superb all metal build

Cons: Close focussing poor, MF (possibly)

Opinion: Not a novelty, this stunted tiny all metal lens is otherwise a Nikkor standard 50mm lens. And in attractive silver too. I used it on my Nikon FE2. And being Nikon, I can still use it on my D700 and D7000, using the 'Non CPU' settings. And I have done, recently - see the shot of the door handle. Beautifully made, with smooth manual focus. Optically, it's like other Nikon 50mm f1.8's, fair but usable wide open and really getting sharp and crisp by f2.8. A downside though is the 0.6m close focus, which limits creative use but is OK otherwise and this is due to lack of barrel length for the mechanism to physically extend. Being the owner of a 50mm D f1.4 these days, this little lens doesn't get used, but is too nice to sell! 9/10

Pros: Small size, good optical quality, makes the REFLEX less voluminous

Cons: Shorter focus ring stroke and long focus distance (60cm instead of 45cm) than the other fifties. It doesn't look as solid as the other ai-s

Opinion: The greatest advantage of this lens is compactness. The REFLEX is lighter, clutters less, and so there is room for more in the backpack or bag as well. The optical quality is good, to be satisfied. Compared to other ai or ai-s targets it seems more fragile. If you want to "flatten" the reflex is a great solution, and of good quality.

Pros: Colors, tonal passages, planar scheme, impeccable metal construction and leaded glass, very well-spaced focus, compactness and weight minimized.

Cons: Low direct sun resistance, generates flares. Loss of contrast and magenta saturation in counter-sun scenes. Manual focus - but you should know from the purchase

Opinion: In summary: grade 9, because defects are known in this type of lenses and are similar for many lenses of the seventies-eighties. The resistance to flare is very low, with obvious decadence of contrast and dominant purple and magenta in every where in the countersshot. For the rest, a joy for the eyes ! Beautiful and vivid colors, sensations difficult to make objective to describe them. The images emerge pleasant and the detachment of the floors is remarkable. The tonal passages are natural, the skin is rendered with a sweetness and commendable realism. Sharp from f2, and then at 5.6 becomes very sharp; a f8 as usual for this type of lens impresses for cleanliness and sharpness. Chromatic aberrations in the norm, nothing of concern and is limited to small halos. I have done many portraits with this lens and i have always been very satisfied, both with the sunlight and with the flashes in the studio. Don't confuse this version with the E series. This version, where the "E" sign is missing on the edge of the lens, represents an end point for the development of optics. Subsequent versions introduced autofocus but progressively lost quality in lenses and materials. Compared to the current 50mm Af-s G there is no comparison in the rendering of colors and tonal passages. Where the G series surpasses the old man is in the correction of night lights, such as neon, and in the light shots, as modern coating paints are more effective in these kinds of photography.
