Pros: Colors, bokeh, delicate rendering, respectful, weight. Made in Japan, old school. CRC system.
Cons: Focusing at f/2 on DSLRs requires a lot of attention and precision. Too bad it's not f/1.4!
Opinion: With a kit consisting essentially of Leica R optics, I own, as a complement, the AI version of this model and use it on D810, along with a few other Nikon masterpieces that survived the Leica R: for sporadic use, as particular. It gave me great satisfaction! I am crazy about its colors: this aspect is purely subjective, but those looking for the quality and yield of Nikon AI optics will not be disappointed: another gem in Nikon production. Very delicate, very respectful, not very aggressive at full aperture in portraits set with little ambient light, it is an optics.born for this application, in my opinion. Colors and blurred moving. Pastel colors,. In portraits set with low light I prefer it to the Leitz Elmarit-R 28/2.8, more aggressive and with a less decisive and undreamy blur (and it is not due to the fact that the Nikon is an f/2 and the Leica an f/2.8, it is above all a matter of a very different character!), even if for all other uses I prefer and systematically use the Leica by far, There is no story. For the record, since most are only interested in sharpness: from f / 4 is ultra-sharp ......., but honestly I do not care at all......, indeed I like very much, I search, the abrupt loss of sharpness at the last quarter of the frame, for creative purposes ...... It requires a lot of precision and accuracy in focusing at f,/2 with modern DSLRs: unlike other bright Nikon AI/AI-s lenses, with this one focusing at full aperture requires a lot of zeal. If you work with accuracy and handle (in the sense of knowing how to evaluate the type of framing and depth of field), satisfaction is guaranteed. The CRC system ensures excellent performance even at minimum focusing distances. It outclasses the Zeiss Distagon 28/2 ZF/ZF.2 for sharpness and blur. However, 36 megapixels, in my opinion, put this lens on the ropes at shorter focusing distances, but only at f/2: from f/2.8 it meets the great demands of the D810 sensor. Endlessly, always speaking exclusively of f/2, it holds well. Agree a necessary softness, textbook, for portraits set with little light at f / 2, but in my opinion a sharper hair in the center would have been better, just to be critical. Excellent yield also at f / 8 and f / 11, where I still prefer the Leica Elmarit-R 28 / 2.8. The ultra-bright optics modern, plastic and that look like toys (and we do not know how much they will remain mechanically reliable over time!!), made in China and Thailand, I leave them to others. So much good metal, so much pleasure to the touch, even if still far from a Zeiss, as a sensation and mechanical precision. Too bad it's not f/1.4! |
