Its focal length and VR make it very flexible. It is particularly suitable for portraits, still life and landscapes, of course as well as macro photography... and it is also light (this is indispensable for me: I use it with a Nikon D3200, a very manageable set). But the characteristics that really amazed me are: its efficiency in the backlight and its sharpness even in the corners: an excellent quality! The only thing I find slightly lower is the autofocus that sometimes does not hook the subject, but nothing serious: you can help manually without unlocking it and after it is very precise (also in very close macros I use manual focus). I am also very satisfied with the color yield; I have rarely noticed small chromatic aberrations, which I have sometimes corrected with Nikon Capture NX-D (simple and efficient free program). Overall I really like the lens for really beautiful colors, sharpness and image quality! I would buy it back immediately: my rating is 9 (it would be 10 with a faster autofocus and a lower price)

Pros: Amazingly Sharp, Exceptional precision AF, Bright in Macro 1: 1 (other more expensive and seemingly bright macro lenses become darker when they arrive at 1: 1), lightweight, protected against water and dust! , Full time manual focusing, the absence of ghost and flare even when used against the ruthless.

Pros: Crisp, versatile with good optical qualities

The difference that you will notice right away is more difficult to frame and focus manually (almost systematically use this mode). Also you are forced to get closer to the subject given the shorter focal length (if you use both the objectives of the right size). While the 105 is built impeccably both in materials and in the assembly, 85 is quite plasticky and even has some modest "game" the ring of focus. However, thanks to the use of materials maybe less noble is much lighter and more maneuverable the august brother. If for you the weight is not a problem, invested € 400 more and bought the 105mm. However my overall opinion of this lens remains good, the fault is of 105mm which is perfect (see my review).
