Pros: Colors, resolution, character, build quality

Cons: nothing

Opinion: NB. I review the K version (1976-1977) adapted AI. A lens with a lot of character and extremely versatile. At f1.4 it looks dreamy, vignettes a lot, ghosting is evident with colors that trespass beyond their edges, but it is already very resolving, the details are all there. Closing down to f2 is another lens, excellent micro-contrast the ghosting disappears, the coma remains for the point lights at the edges. From the tests I carried out at f8 on the D800 it is much sharper than the 35mm f1.8 G ED (f8), already among the sharpest lenses of its period, although still the 1.8 remains much higher at the edges. The distortion is not excessive and creating a profile with the "Adobe Lens Profile" tool solves it. Chromatic aberrations that are not excessive comparable to G-series lenses. Clearly very bright, but I wouldn't use it for astrophotography for ghosting and coma. It has an excellent three-dimensionality, it allows you to detach the tops well even with rather distant objects. In close-up subjects the depth of field is quite shallow but the focus ring is precise and it is not excessively difficult to focus. Final note: it remains sharp even when shooting in 950nm infrared, it also has the red dot for infinity in the ring which helps. It's a very nice lens, reminiscent of the 50mm f1.2 in terms of behavior, rich and full-bodied pastel colors, noticeable blur and just tending to swirling towards the corners. A TA isn't as sharp as modern lenses, but perhaps that makes it even better for portraits or photos where you're looking for a less digital aesthetic.

Pros: Sharpness, font, colors, manual Maf

Cons: At full aperture suffers with high-contrast images or highlights

Opinion: I have owned this sacred monster for some years, aesthetically very beautiful, does not feel the weight of age .. Very performing and with a nice character, the colors are pasty, full, like all the old Ai/Ais Nikon. The manual Maf is not a problem, a bit tiring in low light conditions and at 1.4, but you know, the limit in that case is our eye. The yield is excellent not to say superlative from 2.8 upwards, has a resolution is a hallucinatory contrast, in the center I think it is even better than the modern G. At full aperture it suffers, but it must be specified: a blue / purple halo is created on the edge in case of strong contrast (very dark object on a light background) and this tends to literally "eat" the edges of the darker subject. The more marked the contrast, the more the effect is accentuated. The light points then always at TA explode going out of their edge. In short, let's say that at first glance it is not really the best. However... knowing it with time you can get excellent results even at TA, the important thing is to use it in low contrast conditions for example on cloudy days or in any case in natural light conditions. The resolution remains excellent even at 1.4 and therefore is great for developing shots in BN. Great obviously for those who want to take creative shots with halos or flares wanted. From F.2 it improves sharply, but only from 2.8 it can be considered perfect. For those who have many ideas also seen the focal length of great use, I consider it a perfect lens that can not miss in any photographic kit FF

Pros: Brightness, quality, colors, blurred, solidity, materials, compactness

Cons: "pure" sharpness to TA (not that it is unusable as they say, simply a "veiled" thread; from f/2 it is excellent)

Opinion: Premise that will sound like a blasphemy to the "purists": I use this lens - obviously with an adapter - on a Canon 5D II. I was looking for a quality 35mm f/1.4 at a good price, I found a deal for this lens and, having ascertained that I could use it with an adapter, I took it. I must say that I did not regret it at all, now I use it for all those indoor portraits for which my Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 are too long. The focus is soft and precise (as can be expected from a perspective of this level, albeit dated), the dimensions are contained and the feeling of solidity is excellent. The yield to TA, which others have called "nebulous / veiled" is not as intrusive as you might think: of course, at f / 1.4 maybe I would not take pictures of panoramas, in which you look for hyper sharpness. But, apart from the fact that, even for those uses, already from f / 2 completely changes "face", becoming extremely sharp (the top I would say at f / 5.6), for what I use it, or full-length portraits indoors, even at f / 1.4 you do not get bad results at all. In those circumstances the famous "veiling" is barely perceptible, as far as I can see. And in any case, I repeat, just close at f/2 to make it vanish. What can I say: as a lover of "no brand" photography, I am very satisfied with this goal!

Pros: Contrast and sharpness at f4, blurry, creative possibilities at full opening

Cons: veiled at f1.4 on the D850's digital sensor

Opinion: Warning: This review refers to the Ai K version produced until 1977. This lens has been produced since 1970 remaining in production for 50 years with unchanged optical scheme and improvements that first affected the anti-glare treatment and then the composition of the glasses of some lenses to improve aberrations and the diaphragm passed to 9 slats. Designed for NASA, it shows excellent sharpness and contrast, reaching a maximum of f4-5.6. But at f1.4 it's really another lens, producing nebulous, low-contrast images, with strong chromatic aberrations and a visible swirlwing effect of blurry. Defects that disappear almost completely closing at f2. Yet this behavior, which is not attributable to the lens, as to its use on a medium for which it was not designed - digital - manages to produce very personalized images that lend themselves to a very creative use of its very soft blurry. In fact, the nikkor 35 f1.4 is a 'dual' lens: at full opening it is a 'concept lens' that offers experimentation and creativity. From f2 onwards it is an impeccable lens suitable for any use where maximum is required on every aspect of the image. The recommendation is to try it and evaluate it on your machine, because experience shows that many lenses - pre-digital - change character as the sensor on which they are used changes. This review is based on the Nikon D850. If I were to give a vote: I would say 9.8 closed at f4 and 10+ at full opening for the space it gives to creativity. It is actually not assessable because the character changes depending on the sensor used.

Pros: build quality, Sharpness global focus ring precision fire

Cons: Under certain conditions, unusable TA; the most obvious coma thrusts openings

Opinion: impeccable build quality, pleasant to the touch, good at f 2, crisp even to modern standards to f4 / f5.6, so that often do not make out from my AF-S 24/70 2.8 ... The vignetting is there but it is lower than the most recent ultra blur and, while not a focal peculiarity is rather smooth and unobtrusive. rnPurtroppo to 1.4 instead you enter a surreal world, which in certain contexts can also be there and have her why, but generally not so much a loss of sharpness as contrast, and markedly, and an intrusive and annoying coma TA, losing much confrontation in this field with more lenses moderne.rnQuesta lens is new still, all in all it is an excellent lens, but pays 1.4 to the comparison with the modern optics, presents a bit 'of problems and needs a little 'more work in post.rnBenchè is one of my favorite lenses, recommended for those who like old-style made with respectcontrast and colorirn
