Pros: Construction,size,colors,general performance,robustness, aesthetics, simplicity,2.8
Cons: Flare, at the corners
Opinion: I've been pointing it out for a while, trying to get as much info as possible about it. Unfortunately, it is not a famous lens and on the web the info is not many... Found used, but in very good condition at a very advantageous price. I liked it right away, because it covers excellent focal points for my needs. It's a 2.8. it does not have electronics that makes it delicate, in my view it is aesthetically beautiful, it is part of the VERI Nikon. It took me a while to appreciate it. As soon as I arrived, I was disappointed. The first pictures/evidence, it was a total crap!! Then I realized that the very swinging yield, was due to a slight Back Focus. After correcting, the optics changed character. At 2.8, the yield is good in the middle, but as soon as you deviate its sides, the definition drops a lot until you get to be almost nothing at the extreme edges and, above all, at the corners. From f4 you have, on the other hand, a marked improvement.... From 5.6 and up, it gets awesome. There are ACEs, which accentuate the problems to large openings, but just a click to solve the problem. Excellent the absence of distortion, which at 20mm is almost nothing. I really like his surrender. Soft tones and shadows never closed and the colors are quite faithful. The only defect absolutely impossible to tame, are the flares.... Unmanageable. If the sun enters the frame, they are all bitter zebedei, because the flares are there, there are many and they are well present. And ugly too!! The construction is great. Glass and (most) metal. There's no point in electronics, so there's nothing to break. The dials are well taken and the front lens does not protrude. It's not a modern optic, so that's it.... Except perfect. But it's part of those optics that had a character of their own. It has to be understood. And in any case, he absolutely knows how to deliver great results. Do I recommend it? Yes. Absolutely!! |
