Pros: smal

Cons: min focus distance 1m

Opinion: bice lens for portrait on milc cameras. he Jupiter-8 may not be the cheapest lens you can get for your Leica (or any other M- or M39-mount camera), but it is certainly one of the cheapest. Made by KMZ in the former Soviet Union between the 50ies and 90ies, the Jupiter-8 is a copy of the pre-war Contax 50mm f2 Sonnar lens from Zeiss — but in M39 Leica screw mount (so you'll need an adapter to use it on an M-mount body like the CL). During the time that it was made, it came in a number of different chrome (earlier) and black (later) versions, with the one pictured above being out of one of the last batches that were made. It's a simple lens mechanically and optically, and it may not work properly from the get-go. But it can be had so cheaply that you can assemble a nice one yourself out of three broken ones.

Pros: if it's a good copy it's great value for money, great for portraits as it isolates the subject

Cons: focus distance of 1 m, the stop ring rotates with that of fire (in my version, there should be another antecedent where it does not happen)

Opinion: Fortunately, my copy is good; In fact, the variability between specimens of ex CCCP objectives is well known. I used it with black and white film and with yellow filter always mounted to improve the contrast. A simple objective in its scheme is a copy of the Zeiss Opton Sonnar 1:2, with the progenitor sharing, to simplify, the good yield in the center and poor in the rest of the frame. There are, of course, differences between the original and the Jupiter, but if i have a good specimen I can confirm that the Russian economic is asserting itself. Clearly it is not suitable for landscapes or architecture, unless a refined 'artistic' effect, but for portraits it is absolutely to be considered. Unfortunately the minimum focus distance at 1 meter is too long in my opinion, precisely because of its application it is a pity not to be able to get closer to the subject. Soft at full opening, better dialysed from f3 onwards. In my opinion the 'sweet sopt' is around f8. The diaphragm ring is continuous, but it's hard to turn it inadvertently. Unfortunately it rotates with the fire ring, so in some locations you can not control the stop unless you rotate the camera. Another problem is whether you use a square shovel as it would rotate this too. I have no idea about the rendering on digital, but for vintage lovers, given the expense, I would say it's worth a try.
