Pros: Sharpness, flare resistance.

Cons: Diffraction at 20mm, distortion present.

Opinion: This lens offers a sharpness, as far as I'm concerned, never found in a zoom that starts at 16mm eq. From 20mm to 30mm at f4 it's great and at f5.6 it becomes extraordinary up to the extreme angles. Fine details are rendered to perfection even on 100mp. Above 30mm it requires an f8 closure to be perfect, i.e. to take advantage of the 100s' sensor. On the 50SII already at f5.6 it is an extraordinary lens at every focal length and in every area of the photo. The flare resistance is remarkable, the af is quiet and very precise. Indoors being f4 would require a camera with some sensitivity on the af... the weak point of the 100s and even worse than the 50SII. The distortion at 20mm is there but it's not dramatic, the software correction doesn't stretch the image too much. Already at 23mm when compared to the fixed it has better distortion, similar sharpness and equal weight. This is to give an idea of the extraordinary object created by Fuji engineers. The real weakness of this 20-35mm is the diffraction at 20mm. This focal length is the sharpest but it has this defect that, at least for me, is a nuisance. As mentioned above at f5.6 it's awesome... but at f8 it drops! At f11 it is already almost unusable on the 100s and even on the 50SII it is very noticeable. F5.6 is the pinnacle and it's a real shame not to be able to aperture, without suffering such a noticeable drop. Already at 23-24mm the problem is much less invasive, at 28mm or 35mm f11 and even f13 you can use it without problems for example. Either way, it's still an amazing wide-angle zoom, and I'd definitely buy it again.

Pros: Sharpness, versatility, solid construction.

Cons: Price.

Opinion: I also own the GF23 but the 20-35 promptly replaced it in the bag... The versatility is exceptional: you frame, you "zoom", you compose the image and you shoot. For the landscape and the photo of architecture I think it is an indispensable optics. Maybe the GF23 is a sharper thread but you really have to go looking for the hair in the egg to notice it. I do not judge the weight: on the other hand, if you use medium-format you have to get used to the size of the lenses. The price is very high (but well below, for example, the standard of Hasselblad). I reserve an update in a few months, after putting it to the test in a more substantial way.
