Pros: Image quality and pleasantness Extraordinarily light and can also be used handheld.

Cons: Witnessing the vision of the terminal part (attachment) of the lens and touching that "welded" adapter, made of gray metal, even in relief with respect to the surface of the barrel, is a terrifying and gruesome experience worthy of the best horror movie .... To play it down I could quote Henry Fonda in the film "My name is Nobody": "you glitter like the door of a brothel"; ) Consequently among the cons I obviously put the price, well above that of the GM 400 and now equal if not even higher in some situations than the undisputed Sovereign of all 400 2.8, that is the Nikon Z

Opinion: A 400 F2.8 is the Supertele par excellence, the most widespread and sometimes indispensable in the professional field, especially sports. Its focal length combined with its high brightness allow you to work and take home photos in all contexts even when there is no light. This Canon RF also, unlike all the others, has a huge value because it is by far the lightest and can be used freehand. The optical scheme concentrated in the rear close to the camera mount, and its not excessive length (it is 10cm shorter than the 600) help to create a perfect balance during use, especially on the R1, allowing you to shoot even handheld for a long time without feeling fatigue, despite a weight of over 4kg, that seem half of it. Compared to the 600 F4 RF the difference is huge... The 600 after a few minutes makes itself felt heavily and necessarily requires a monopod. Even compared to the Sony 400 GM which can benefit from lighter flagships such as A1 and A9, the difference is obvious, and even compared to the Sony 200-600 zooms and especially the 400-800 and 150-600 this RF 400 is more pleasant to use freehand, despite a much higher weight on paper, which however is not felt. Despite the imposing size inside it seems empty, it is impressive! The only drawback is represented by the bracket which is not ergonomic and above all it is too short and penalizes its transport, in this regard I also recommend replacing it with a Leofoto CF - 05 as recommended by the user Marco50. In terms of selectors, I would have liked the direct presence of the Full time manual focus (as on the 400 GM) which is not present here. Regarding performance: Autofocus: by now the autofocus of zooms such as the 100-500 is so good that being able to instantly notice differences in speed, responsiveness and precision is practically impossible.... any differences may emerge in critical light conditions where an F2.8 sees us better ... Optical quality: many "curious" and many enthusiasts who look at it with admiration, desiring and dreaming of it, might think that its sharpness like that of a 600 F4 can be incredibly high, much more than that of a cheaper telezoom (100-500, 200-600, 150-600 ... etc... ) and that the churned photos are much sharper .... In reality, this is not the case ..... or at least not as much as you can imagine... The sharpness of a 400/600 is about that of a modern and very good Canon 100-500, only slightly higher... difficult to see differences, if not pointing sights and then viewing on the monitor at 100% ... in practice, in the field, you will not see any differences... However, what you will see, quite clearly, will be an overall more pleasant and "alive" image while that of the zooms will be flatter ... The details are taken and reproduced in a clearer and more pleasant way, the subjects appear more embossed, in relief with the background, and the background is obviously cleaner. A characteristic of luminous supercanvases is in fact that they reproduce an intense blur, but at the same time sober, neutral, as well as the colors that are more real and faithful.

Pros: Weight speed maneuverability

Cons: As always for these lenses the high price

Opinion: I have been using this lens for a few months, I had many doubts to replace my EF 500 f4 ISII that for many years has given me a lot of satisfaction. I spent an interlude of time using a canon EF 400 f4 DO II with which the spark did not go off. My only doubt for this lens were the missing 100 mm that these days always serve, but if I compare the weight and handling I am convinced immediately, I reduced the weight to a minimum using leofoto bracket (recovered from the previous lens) and folding lens coat hood by doing so you can afford to do wandering hunting even at my age. Autofocus speed certainly the fastest I've ever had, with 1.4 you don't notice any difference and with the 2x it's very fast. Quality: remarkable optical yield at 2.8 if I think that I can have an 800 mm f 5.6 using the 2x also considering the fact that the quality suffers, but I do not see all the difference that I have found in other optics. I will continue to use it in various conditions to see more strengths and weaknesses. I continue to trust mom Canon, but considering that parts of the body have already taken my kidneys I need. Surely the positive thing that the used is easily given away and this makes the difference because it sweetens the pill.
