Pros: Great design, robust, good focal range

Cons: Noise and file cleaning

Opinion: The machine follows the successful design of the previous models, but the passage from 10 to 14 mpix is, in fact, a big step backwards on the quality of the jpgs produced due to the conspicuous noise and artifacts produced on the jpgs. A bit of history: this compact was given to me free of charge by the Canon service as a replacement for a G9 the fourth time I sent it for repair (all my respect to the Canon service). The transition from 10 to 14 mpix and to a lens that went down from 35mm (equiv.) to 28mm, in theory was a big improvement. Unfortunately, it was not true. At the field test, the G10 immediately proved to be much more robust and free of what we could call manufacturing defects, however, it was 2008 and at that time -especially with the compact- I shot only in jpg, the immediate result was that I found myself with much less plastic images and with a much less clean color than the previous G9 precisely because of the jpg saving algorithm. Looking back today at the images I took with the G9 first, and then G10, those of the G9 stand out for the beauty of the color and cleanliness of the file; moreover, the G9 was truly excellent in close-up, perhaps its best function. In hindsight, shooting in raw and using current noise reduction software, the images taken with the G10 could easily be improved, and in this regard it is useful to remember that with the subsequent models G11 and G12 Canon returned to the 10 mpix sensor. Today, if I had to choose, I would go to the G9.

Pros: Robust, ergonomic (Canon does not contradict itself), well designed, excellent lens

Cons: The sensor has a somewhat modest resolution according to today's ceiteri (2025). The sensor is quite noisy even at "only" 400 ISO: but it can be remedied with adequate software that gives new life to the camera

Opinion: As I said in the "Cons" paragraph, the sensor is quite noisy. However, there is a software from the French company DxO, called Pure Raw, now in version 5 (May 2025), which, using AI techniques, cleans photos in an almost miraculous way, bringing them to the level of contemporary cameras. Almost like buying a new camera. One caveat: Pure Raw only works on photos in RAW format, not JPEG. With the G10 it's not a problem, just set the correct format on the camera.

Pros: Very economical, yet robust, great battery life, well equipped with physical controls and with a very useful and partially active optical viewfinder; very intuitive menus, good for close-up, ND filter, AF looks great to me, hot shoe for flash

Cons: I would have liked an automatic mechanism to switch between the display and the optical viewfinder

Opinion: I used for some time a compact camera, Panasonic TZ10, to understand if what I had learned would allow me to take good photos even without reflex/ml and the test was positive, so I decided to get a more advanced compact without breaking the bank and this one corresponds to my desires; unfortunately it weighs three times as much as the previous one, but you can still put it in a handbag attached to the fanny pack or belt so you can do it; the optical viewfinder is bright, not at all useless as it is described, and it is not all passive (like the Pocket Instamatic of the past) but partially active because it "sees" the movement of the lens and consequent change of field of view; moreover, I can also use it wearing Julbo ice on the sun, and I find the parallax error minuscule for other things only on the vertical; the AF seems to me to be excellent; the under/overexposure wheel is very convenient; the time between switching on and shooting is quick, the close-up function is good; The very intuitive menu requires almost no manual use; I've tested the ND filter and it's useful; Despite being a used camera, the wheels turn well and are reliable, ditto the keys; The battery lasts a long time, even when using flash

Pros: Professional construction, controls, CCD sensor, lens, compactness

Cons: Yield over 200 ISO, OVF viewfinder, operating slowness

Opinion: I bought this 2008 machine (!) mainly for three reasons: the CCD sensor, the portability and the robust and almost professional construction. Despite the sensor of less than an inch churns out beautiful images, balanced and with a pleasantness of colors sometimes enchanting. Forget about using it over 200 ISO anyway... the sensor is what it is and you will find yourself with a tide of grain not really pleasant (even using DXO things do not improve much, indeed you get rather unnatural results for my taste). Its optimal use is at 80 iso and in P (so much the lens is a 2.8 to 28mm equivalent and therefore the blurred is what it is.... rather non-existent). It is a very basic machine and I consider this a great value: well-arranged physical controls and few things to set. It suffers from hotpixels even with very short shutter speeds, so watch out when developing RAW (with Lightroom and Silkypix they are automatically corrected while with Exposure X7 or Rawtherapee just act on the appropriate slider). The OVF viewfinder is comfortable in emergency situations but very small and optically it is really scarce and in addition without any information ... patience, just rely on the good autofocus in flexizone. Forget about bursts and photos after sunset freehand. I paired it with a small Metz flash (the AF 24) and indoors now goes which is a wonder. Do I recommend this vintage car in 2022? If you want beautiful natural colors, you are not interested in a megarisolution (14 mega are not so few anyway especially on such a sensor), you are not interested in 10 fps and take night photos freehand ..... this in my opinion is an excellent and very cheap purchase. In addition, you can literally always carry it with you!

Pros: Dimensions and maneuverability in relation to the quality of the images produced and the creative possibilities. Professional body building and optics. Aesthetics.

Cons: Noise at high ISO. Does leave the camera at home more than a few times (it's a flaw?).

Opinion: Camera body and professional attention to detail, all metal. Despite its compact dimensions (with the machine off becomes practically flat!) You hold well. Even compared with a reflex compact (type 1100D) or a bridge with the advantage in terms of weight and dimensions remains important, in the face of considerable creative possibilities. The presence of a viewfinder "emergency" can be helpful in different circumstances. The 14.7-megapixel sensor produces high-quality images from 80 to 200 ISO, just good at ISO 400. The 800/1.600 ISO you can use it ... for souvenir photos! The stabilizer this perspective certainly helps when there is little light, but the problem of night photos related to noise above 400 ISO, this solves with a micro tripod pocket.
