Pros: Sidereal value for money, premium appearance and construction, discreet sharpness in the center even at f 0.95, bokeh, MAF well manageable with focus peaking. And it enhances the sensors of cheap cameras. It teaches you to shoot well.
Cons: Slack lens cap. Very heavy, it can unbalance compact cameras and affect their portability. Excessive flare (but it is not a defect for everyone). Evident fringing at the most extreme openings, but at this price... Minimum distance of MAF a little above average.
Opinion: Fantastic, a bomb. Of course it is heavy: with my Z30 it actually doubles the weight of the package. And of course, given the tough metal construction with 11 lenses. The lens cap, which wants to give the impression of premium with the "soft pressure" insertion and also succeeds, pays with the low friction and it is clear that it will slip off easily. But he is a monster. I paid 169 euros (169 euros), when new, a lens that is worth three times as much. The sharpness at full aperture in the center is decent in itself but becomes exceptional considering that we are talking about f 0.95. The fringing is evident but the same is true, with all that light coming in it is difficult to treat. These limits tend to disappear from f 1.8-2.0 upwards, as is the case for almost all very wide open lenses. But, boy, how bright is it! The night street becomes an immense pleasure, the detachment of the floors offers glimpses of pure poetry, the photos seem to speak. The portraits, paying attention to the very shallow depth of field, look like works of art. And if you have a stabilized sensor you will be able to photograph handheld practically in the dark, with low ISO, and consequently a very high quality. In practice, it allows photographs in conditions that are usually guaranteed only by particular premium lenses at an exorbitant cost (although compared to these it clearly pays a bit in terms of definition and chromatic aberrations). It only has manual focus and this will push you to learn again, if you are as old as I am, or learn for the first time, if you are young, to focus by hand. A pleasant thing, actually, that makes you feel more familiar with the art of photography, and less difficult than you think, as I explain later. The fluid aperture ring, without snaps to default values as is usually the case, is not a problem for me. I think you just have to get used to not touching it when focusing. And for those who make videos (not my case) it is an unexpected gift because it allows you to obtain beautiful effects by playing with the diaphragm and without the slightest noise. The flare is actually bulky and here it could have been done a little better, but there are those who appreciate it and use it to have poetic effects. The bokeh with 12 blades is good and at 0.95 gives a three-dimensionality that if exploited well is really effective. The manual focus ring is creamy, with the right friction and long travel, so it allows millimetric adjustments. And using focus peaking you can focus well even with the maximum aperture. Don't be discouraged if the first shots are not perfectly centered, I assure you that the more you use it, the better you will become because you will learn to better interpret the contours of focus peaking. And after a while you will also reach a certain speed. You will really learn how everything works, especially the ISO management, and how to take full advantage of the camera and this will also come in handy with lenses with AF. This lens lets in so much light that it breathes new life into even low-end cameras, to the point that you'll feel like you're in a new camera. Once you have become familiar with exposure management, you will be able to shoot even with fast shutter speeds keeping the ISO so low that even sensors that are not excellent (and perhaps not stabilized) will give good results. Of course, if you then mount this lens on an already performing FF camera, perhaps with over 30 MP, you will reach ecstasy. In this regard, I could not verify for myself but it seems that even if mounted on full-frame sensors it gives a vignette that is not exaggerated and well manageable in post. But take this thing with a grain of salt. |
