Pros: Best ergonomics with manual focus lenses (Nikkor, Zeiss, Voigtländer...). Excellent sensor. Reasonable size and weight. Endless battery life with MF lenses.

Cons: Expensive. Relatively small AF zone. One-handed exposure compensation operation is not easy.

Opinion: When I bought it in 2014, it was supposed to be my backup camera, flanking the D800. Within months, it became my main, and most of the time my only camera. It is my *daily* companion since then (we are in 2021). This preference coincides with my other preference, namely for compact manual focus lenses. Being able to operate the aperture ring keeps the left hand busy; besides, the aperture wheel (on the front right) is a bit too small and stiff, which hurts your fingers. Ergonomics aside, the main reason for the preference over the D800 is, the sensor delivers better images (better color balance, lower noise at equal viewing size; about 1 EV advantage). I can be safely used up to 12800 ISO (color) or 25600 ISO (B&W). To feel comfortable, the Df should be used with a DK-17M magnifying eyepiece; it does not restrain the field of view if you do not wear glasses. The "Quiet" mode is sure not very quiet compared to a Leica, but still very useful (less noise of course, and a gentler mirror slap).

Pros: the perfect camera for travel; lightweight body, very good quality of jpg, battery life

Cons: battery cover comes off: never try to change the battery during a walk; the price

Opinion: The review is based on the experience with the previous equipment: from the Russian range-finder zorki 4 through DDR-made practica MTL3, and finally: Nikons: F601m, F100, FM2, FM3a, D700, D5500, D7100. Unfortunately, the images conveyed by diapositives (Fuji velvia100, 50; provia 100) shown on a large screen (160 cm) cannot be compared with the digital images on 30 inch monitor. From all respects the former make a better impression, at least regarding the color tones and making an impression of multi-plan views. The photos shown in my modest galleries here do not reflect the overall attractiveness of dias. Moreover, Fuji reala 100 gave beautiful color tones. Since now both velvia and reala disappeared we have to use digital cameras. They should be compared only with their digital counterparts. Nikon D700 gives very good images of human faces and close lying subjects. Since its jpg s are unusable it is very inconvenient for travel photography. We have to reckon with spending hundreds of hours at PP. I have also tried D750 for 3 days and happily returned it to the shop, since 10 % of images were unsharp (with nikkor 24-120 f4*). The jpgs were very precise but mostly ugly and unattractive. Nikon D7100 cannot be used indoors without a flash, since max ISO is ca 800. This is a good camera for a good weather. I guess that D8XX will be similar, but I have no experience. Nikon Df is free of these drawbacks It can be used as a travel camera in all cases: outdoor and indoor. The jpg files at standard settings are attractive and, simultaneously, highly correct. Be careful with raw files-they are huge. The peculiar feature of Nikon Df is very accurate and pleasing rendering of green shades, which is a crucial factor in the landscape photography. In contrast, all other cameras mentioned above render the green colors of nature incorrectly. The worst tones appear during the sunsets. Nikon Df is a tactile camera; the change of settings can be done without putting the body to our eyes. This is vitally important for our safety, when we walk along the stones of mountain ridges , cross the rocky saddles, traverse the hillsides. On the other hand the constant change of settings is indispensable in forests, e.g. going along levadas of Madeira, we have to introduce the exposure compensation carefully (e.g -.7) and have a constant control over ISO. ************************************************************************************************************************ * Now I know that this lens was in fact spoiled, just D750 disclosed its defficiency; this lens failed to work some months later. Thus, this lens should not be bought used, it is very delicate, the reason is VR. I am withdrawing hereby my criticism towards AF in D750, but jpgs are much worse than those from Df.

Pros: vintage body, sensor inherited from the D4s, file cleaning, high ISO resistance, infinite battery life, possibility of mounting all Nikon lenses with F bayone (therefore from the 50s) with the exception of the Z, lack of video mode

Cons: AF inherited from the d610, (but it depends on what kind of photography you practice), lack of tilting dislay... not having it.

Opinion: a machine that at its release, sparked several criticisms ... the DF as far as I'm concerned is the perfect machine for the use I have to make of it... Very light body, which combined with fixed and light optics, is beautiful to take for a walk and the neck is not affected. Cleanliness and details of the Raw files I dare say incredible, thanks to the 16.3 megapixel CMOS sensor inherited from the D4s. Controlling everything from the ring nut at the beginning was a bit difficult, then as the days went by it all became automatic. I love the fact that it is a machine, which was conceived only and solely for reasoned and thoughtful, slow photography... For those who complained about the lack of the video sector, they knew very well before leaving us money, what they were going to buy. the DF coupled with the Af-s 24mm f/1.4 G ED (N) returns files of impressive beauty. That said, I own two camera bodies (one for each color), the only flaws I find are in the autofocus a little uncertain (not recommended for sports and birdlife) inherited from the D610 and technologically I only feel the lack of a tilting display (here it is fixed). rating 9.5.. perfection doesn't exist, but here we get very close (as I see it)

Pros: Really nice vintage body, dials, shutter button, file quality. It pleasantly takes you back in time. The only one that also works with pre-ai

Cons: Apart from the vertically arranged secondary bezel, nothing if you know what you're buying

Opinion: I've had it since 2014, the only owner with only 8000 shots, (having other bodies). I confess that lately I've been thinking about selling it for Zf, but then I wondered why change it? On top of that, the outlay for the change would not be painless. It certainly doesn't have the technology of the ZF but in terms of beauty and retro style it is unbeatable, a real SLR. I use it mainly with 58/1.4, 105 DC and 180 AIS and it has always given me great satisfaction. If I didn't already have it, maybe I'd get the newer Zf, but I'm fine with that at the moment. Maybe one day I could take the Zf and put it next to my beloved Df. If you are not looking for advanced technologies but only the pleasure of a leap into the past, hold on to it. Fashions pass but you remain, .. Only

Pros: Image quality, compatible with all F lenses, mechanical rings

Cons: No one, if you know what's in your hand

Opinion: I've always liked it, ever since it came out. Socket used a few years ago (it is still expensive today) I use it little but when I use it it always amazes me. I have three autofocus lenses (35 and 50 AF-s and the old AF 180) and a plethora of AI lenses and manual AI preamps. I've used it on trips, for reportage-style work, for concerts and even some ceremonies. The files he churns out translate (easily) into images that seem to have something unique and different, a statement that seems subjective and unverifiable, but so it is. I like to use the outer rings, it's not too heavy, the battery lasts as it should on a DSLR. Finding faults is difficult, given the type of machine... I don't use it much so as not to "spoil it"... A second body should be sought...
