Pros: price/quality ratio

Cons: does not excel at anything, if it can be a defect

Opinion: Now it has accompanied me for over 3 years, and next to the 85 1.8, I find it the ideal companion to have a focal length now habitual thanks to the daily use of mobile phones to take flying photos, therefore with a "familiar" field of view and suitable in many generalist situations of daily life. It is a light and compact fixed, rather cheap that I often prefer to the Tamron 17-28 2.8 that, after buying it, I thought could lead me to sell the 28 f2 ... but instead for some uses I prefer the small fixed, not so much for the quality as for the bulk and weight that make it almost an "invisible all-rounder", both during travels, especially in low light conditions, and for when the spaces tighten but you do not want to give up some portrait with a discreet detachment of the floors ... without risking the distortions of wider focal lengths. It never misses a shot like autofocus, although it is not a splinter, but more reliable (at least in my experience) than the 35 2.8 Samyang. Even the construction is more than honest, with its small hood that you can safely leave mounted given the negligible footprint. It makes the A7iii practically a compact FF, with indisputable quality, more than enough for amateur use, if you do not have claims to detail and correctness in the most extreme edges. It is often found around 300€ new... if you have constructive demands or uncompromising quality, it is not this 28 that can satisfy them, but for these objectives it is necessary to at least double if not triple the expense (see GM). As for vignetting and distortion, which are present especially the first at f2-2.8, I find that with LR (as I think now for every photo editing program) these are no longer defects, or at least do not represent problems, as with a click they disappear.

Pros: Lightweight, compact, sharp already at full aperture.

Cons: None for the price

Opinion: Good quality lens, light and well balanced in overall performance. It pairs perfectly with the a7, an ideal mix for travel and street. Sharpness over the whole frame at least my copy. Vignette a bit but it can be corrected with a click from lightroom. For those looking for quality at an affordable cost there is nothing better.

Pros: is the only 28mm f2, colors, sharpness in the center, backlight seal, construction, weight, bokeh

Cons: sharp extreme edges even closed to f11, distortion

Opinion: taken for video on a7s, focal that I prefer for this use compared to 24mm, the lens is made well (I know that the paint does not last much but all metal); optically slow good but not excellent, at the extreme edges it never totally recovers even at f11 (curvature of field?), while at f2 usable with good central-2/3 sharpness of the frame with a good bokeh; af on the a7s precise but not fast (also affects the machine)

Pros: Optical and constructive quality. Value for money.

Cons: Perhaps the painting too delicate and the quality of the lampshed.

Opinion: A relatively economical goal, but entirely in metal and with an excellent yield in color and sharpness. Not for nothing do I think it has been pointed out by dpreview as one of the best value for money goals for Sony. The 28 mm is a classic focal point and those who are so many years old on their shoulders, like me, will remember that the three focal points to have in the bag were precisely the 28, the 50 and the 135. Back then there were no all-rounder zooms or in any case their quality was significantly lower than the fixed. Definitely to have in place.

Pros: General portability, general performance and price

Cons: Edge quality and distortion

Opinion: Purchased as a lightweight lens from photo-journalism, especially when you have to go unnoticed, and placed in the optical park with the Samyang 14 and 18mm 2.8, the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 and the Sony 85mm 1.8. He does his job well, even if it is not a perfect lens, in fact the lightness and dimensions are perfect for the concept of transportability - often just an illusion - of mirrorless. The overall performance is good in fact the autofocus is very fast and the lens in the center is sharp, however the quality at the edges is quite mediocre. In fact it is the opposite of Sigma Art, autofocus not perfect but very sharp lens on the whole frame. Personally, the choice between these two objectives is closely influenced by light (if it is evening the Sigma is a must) and portability/visibility (the Sony is unreachable). Price, transportability and rather good quality make this 28mm highly recommended if you choose it for the use for which it was designed. Keep in mind, however, that it does not excel at anything. There are semi-grandangles, street lenses and better portrait lenses for the photographic genre for which they were designed.
