Pros: robust construction and tropicalization, good overall sharpness, precise autofocus and improved speed, some very useful functions

Cons: weight, footprint, slightly hard zoom ring, maybe even the price

Opinion: I took this lens essentially for motorsport because on the long focal points I was discovered on the K1, and I reserve the right to eventually integrate the review as soon as it is possible to watch some live races, since now it is only run behind closed doors. I have tried it in other situations, especially on bird life or testing it on cars that pass under the house, and the first thing you notice is certainly the most reactive autofocus compared to the Pentax SDM (to be clear that of 200 and 300 mm), manages to follow the subject better while maintaining a more than good precision, especially using the central focus point. Also taking advantage of the peripheral points on some rare occasion hesitates a little if the background is confused, but this I believe also happens for other optics. I believe that the limiter, which Pentax has decided to install, contributes to this improvement. It was definitely time! Another merit is the good overall sharpness. Buying it I expected a situation a little compromise given the not indifferent focal excursion, instead even at 450 mm and at full opening the frame is appreciably sharp especially in the center. At the edges it is a little less, but just close by 2/3 stop and the situation improves a lot. Moreover, given the excellent dynamic range of the K1 sensor (the only body I use it on) you can unraam without fear of raising ISOs. Obviously no problem at shorter focal points, where it can compete with 300 mm, and aberrations appear only in very rare cases on the margins between the very closed shadows and the lights at the edge of the burn, but nothing that cannot be solved in PP. Certainly useful the zoom lock at the minimum focal point, even if on my specimen the ring is a bit hard so it is difficult that it can extend during transport, and very intelligent the preset of the autofocus, with which through the buttons on the barrel you can set a focus distance and recall it in case of need, a valuable function for example in racetrack races where cars pass more or less always on the same trajectory, therefore at the same distance. A nod to the construction, rocky and tropicalized as per Pentax tradition, and very well studied the graft/disengagement system of the (robust) bracket for the tripod, impossible to accidentally remove. A little light but all in all adequate the lampshade, with the front covered in rubber. Among the "cons" there is definitely the weight. It is useless to turn around, it is really heavy, with the K1 you exceed 3 kg and this, combined with the fact that the lens stretches quite zooming in, quite limits the handling. We need sturdy arms because after half an hour of freehand use you begin to feel various sores and pains, so a monopid is practically a must, or at least a support for elbows (wall, balustrade, table, etc...). Personally for the transport I exhumed a large and robust padded strap whose lower plate screws firmly to the bracket for the tripod, so that I can hold it crossbody without weighing it on the neck (and the cervical thanks!). Having said the relative hardness of the zoom ring, a reference to the price, which seems to me a little high again. I bought it during pentax's "cashback" campaign, so with a 10% discount, plus an additional small discount from my shopkeeper, for a sum of very little more than 2000€, and in my opinion this should be the right price, adapted to the quality and certainly remarkable performance of the optics. Vote 8 full.

Pros: Great focal excursion, good AF, great construction

Cons: Price

Opinion: I say that I am passionate about landscape and natural photography and my impressions relate to the use in these areas. Bought used. Tried on both KP and K1-II. Sharp objective, to have maximum yield you need to close to f7,1 or f8. On 36mpx sensor, the photos are crisp up to a zoom of 80%. On FF 36mpx it is therefore a lens that does not allow you to make the most of the machine's capabilities. Very nice blur. I didn't notice chromatic aberrations. The lampshade is not a work of art but I honestly wouldn't call it against. For the performance we are talking about the price from new is high but if you find used it is worth it.

Pros: The quality of the Pentax lens's optical and construction materials

Cons: Weight, price

Opinion: It was a tough choice with the Pentax 300f4 and the Pentax 1,4x multiplier, and I've always been a supporter of fixed focals. But now I'm happy and happy with the purchase. Great zoom, of course I will use it almost always at 450 mm for bird-mounted mounted Pentax K3 II. To be honest does not seem to me as clear as the 300f4, but still it goes close, even at 450 mm. I tried it with the 1.4x multiplier, no problem. It was the ultimate proof for the purchase, of course in some cases you need to know how to play a little with the underweight / over-exposed. Ultimately with the duplicator I have a 630 mm canvas. In the rowing hunt you also need to get used to weight, with 300f4 it was just another thing. Personally I believe that in the reviews at the end are the photos that are faithful to the opinions, so good vision.

Pros: sharpness, excellent in all focal

Cons: weight and price

Opinion: I bought used today this goal, the first impression known that F6.3 is already sufficiently clear even to 450, I see no chromatic aberration and it seems to me that with my ff used k-1 is optimized and not seen vignetting and .soddisfatto now I will try to optimize it better to use it to focus 450 per avifauna.oggi I rediscovered semispot function that works well 9 times out of 10 with k1, and this, in doing so I no longer need to underexpose with plenty of light, now I use only this goal and you can see my pictures to get a more precise idea, now after a month of use I am well aware that the photos are sharp at f5.6 decent as in my photo call f5.6, thanks

Pros: Excellent sharpness even at full aperture, ensuring uniformity to the various focal lengths, robust construction, fast autofocus.

Cons: Hood too light.

Opinion: Using this lens for about two months, and I am very positively impressed by its optical quality. In particular, the yield at full aperture at the maximum focal length is surprisingly good: looking at photos to PC with 100% magnification, it is very difficult to distinguish, on the basis of clarity, a photo taken at f5.6 and 450 mm from one taken at f8 or f11. With respect to chromatic aberrations, seem to me very little present, mildly visible only in some areas with very high contrast (thin purplish margins between next to burning lights and shadows, easily correctable in Lightroom or equivalent program) and only magnification to 100%. Autofocus in "single" mode (with K1) is very fast and very accurate, I have no experience with similar objectives of other brands, but really do not think they are many situations where you could ask for better. In "Continuous AF" greater efficiency and speed to follow the subject may be useful in action photography, but this relative limitand continuous AF (though not serious from my point of view, the lens is well-used in nature photography) I think is attributable to more than the lens camera. The lens construction inspires confidence for its strength (with the exception of the plastic lens hood, too light and that seems destined to break easily), and AF buttons on the barrel are actually useful. Well it made the hooking system / removal of the bracket to the tripod. The price is relatively high, but it seems to me entirely appropriate for a lens of this level.
