Pros: Very high optical quality, even with extender. Lightness and balance.

Cons: Only marginal elements. 82mm filters instead of 77mm. Rendering of the light points at the edges.

Opinion: Lens of the highest level. It improves compared to its collapsible sister lens, especially at the minimum focal length. It maintains a very pleasant blur and a very good speed even doubled. With 1.4x extender indistinguishable from smooth, with 2x the drop is there but it is really minimal, compared with for example the 100-500 on the same focal lengths and at full aperture the difference in resolution is really small, which was unthinkable until lenses of a few generations ago. The blur is pleasant, the rendering of the highlights is very good even if the cat-eye effect typical of aspherical elements can become more evident at the edges. The flare resistance is also excellent. So light and balanced that it seems to have a white instead of a short-toed eagle. In this the advantage in use compared to the non-Z version is truly remarkable. Too bad for the 82mm filters: it would have been preferable to have a 77mm diameter as in the case of the non-Z version. It is difficult to find a fault with this lens, apart from a very high price.

Pros: Weight, AF speed, stabilizer, definition, silent dual nano usm motors, multipliable with Extender

Cons: Price

Opinion: My review is given by the comparison with its predecessor EF III, which I own, and with the 70 200 RF first version. First of all, it should be noted that the length of the lens is the same as the EF version, longer than the RF first closed version by 5 cm, but if it opens at 200 the first version becomes almost 2 cm longer so I wouldn't take the length factor too seriously. The sharpness is better than both previous versions, as well as the colors although not too much. The focusing distance has definitely improved, this goes from 49cm to 68cm from 70 to 200 mm while the first RF version stops at 70cm from 70 to 200mm, while the EF version is 1.2 meters from 70 to 200mm. The filters are larger, so they will cost more, if you use them at all! However, the difference is 82mm of the Z to 77mm of the other 2. The reproduction ratio is slightly wider, 0.30 for the Z, 0.23 for the RF and 0.21 for the EF. The dual Nano USM motors make it quieter than previous versions. Chapter multipliers, if on the EF version they could be mounted, and mounted the result was good, on the first RF version they cannot be mounted and this was the reason why I did not buy that lens. Mounted the Extenders on the Z the result is very good, with the 1x4 it goes well, it does not lose either in speed or in lock or sharpness, with the 2X it has some problems focusing on nearby subjects, as the EF version had even if, in my opinion, a little less. For the rest it does its job very well. The customizable dial and selection buttons, present on the previous RF version and not on the EF version, are beautiful. The weight is great, 40g more than the RF version and about 330g less than the EF version, and over the long run of use you can feel them all. Video issue, there is none for anyone, it embarrassingly outclasses both other versions, the aperture ring makes focus breathing practically null and for those who make videos like me it is really a masterstroke. Summing up, the fact that it costs more is justified, of course... too much more... There would be room for improvement but I don't build goals so I'll stop here. Conclusion, if I have to be honest I am extremely satisfied to have bought this lens because it is certainly better than the other 2 for several reasons, the AF attachment from smooth is fantastic reminds me of the 100-500. The stabilization is excellent, but the other versions are not bad either, perhaps this one has that something extra since tasted on panning it made much better than the others. I hope I haven't forgotten anything and have given a review that can help others!!

Pros: Definition, bokeh, focusing distance, responsiveness, stabilization.

Cons: Size, especially length and, first of all, the price.

Opinion: I come from the "short" version, given in exchange for this one and I will try to highlight, in particular, the differences, although this is a first evaluation, always susceptible to ongoing updates. Let's start with the dimensions: the weight is only 40 grams exceeding the other version, while, as already known, the length is about 20 cm, if it had been less it would certainly have been better, but, probably, it is the counterpart of the non-extensibility. The optical scheme is more complex and refined than the other 70-200, thanks to the presence of a few more optical elements, but I must say that a further increase in incisiveness, understood as resolution, is perceptible. The colors are excellent, which seem to me to veer slightly towards warm tones. At the top of the quality level are stabilization, operating speed (given by the 2 nano-usm motors) and silence, while the phenomenon of breathing focus is almost completely absent, it is no coincidence that we are talking about a hybrid lens, designed for videos, as well as for photographic use. Important and significant is the reduction of the minimum focusing distance, which allows close-up shots, not previously possible, with the possibility of isolating the framed subject more from the background (among other things, I benefited from it in the first test photos, such as the one I published below). One of the most appreciable qualities is the soft and "pasty" nature of the blur, thanks to the 11-blade diaphragm. In fact, the transition of the planes is gradual and "gentle", returning a very pleasant bokeh: the detachment, more than consistent, is never brutal. Which one to choose between the two lenses? If portability is the sine qua non, certainly the first version, which, not surprisingly, remains in the price list. If you want a "little more", compared to the already excellent performance of the other, perhaps winking more often also at the use in the video field, certainly this new RF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM Z. The most sore point, which Canon should absolutely improve, is the price!
