Pros: Colors, three-dimensionality, pleasant grain, classic Nikon menu, all the keys in the right place, featherweight, all for a very low price (even 25 - 50 euros!).

Cons: Monitor, automatic white balance with artificial lights.

Opinion: Excellent camera: the files are beautiful, full colors, three-dimensionality of the image already without applying unsharp masks or other corrections. The photographs are much more reminiscent of the appearance of film rather than that of later Nikons. As there is smartphone or CMOS aesthetics, one would call it D100 aesthetics. RAW (8/9 Mb) have a good dynamic range and allow good recovery of highlights and shadows if you shoot with low ISO (200–400); going up, the grain becomes more evident but the images remain pleasant. In natural light, the white balance is perfect, but artificial lighting puts it in crisis, so you will have to do it by hand by shooting in RAW or use a lens to balance it. The AF with modern lenses is quite fast, but with low light it struggles a lot; nothing serious: the 6 Mpx are advantageous, if the image is not perfectly focused it is not noticeable and, in addition, the safety times can be exceeded without too many worries; it is very difficult to find micro-blur, so lower ISO! Looking at the photos taken on the monitor can give a vague idea of the frame, but the quality is low; this means that every time you download files from the CF to your PC you drop your jaw and you are stunned. Even in this he can be more reminiscent of photography taken with analogue cameras than with digital ones. In conclusion, it is a camera that gives a lot of satisfaction: if used with some care it produces fabulous photos, does not feel the neck and costs very little. What can I say, why not take it?

Pros: Surprisingly good image quality for the time; classic Nikon ergonomics; compatibility with Nikon F lenses; lightweight and easily workable RAW files.

Cons: Limited ISO performance (over 800 the quality collapses), dated and not very fast autofocus, slow burst, much outdated technology

Opinion: Purchased in 2002, it was my first underwater reflex and also brought me closer to "dry" photography. A fascinating machine, pleasant to use and of excellent quality at the time. Today it is affected by age and rapidly advancing technology so I made the switch to the D850, but while waiting to suit it I still use the D100 underwater.

Pros: Excellent reflex with similar features to Nikon D70 and D70s

Cons: For the product of the time, no one

Opinion: Bought used years ago, I review it now because I find it an excellent reflex still today. I also own Nikon D200 and Nikon D300. I like that slight grain at high iso, it's great and intuitive even if it's a SEMI PRO. Even if the menus are only in English, you get used to it. I'm still using it a lot despite also having a Nikon D70 that has similar features. Still an excellent REFLEX today. It's nice to photograph even in the old way like film, not as many do with live view, all automatically. It's great for learning, it doesn't have the various programs because it's semi pro.

Pros: The first Pro (not flagship) with Sony CCD sensor, robust and reliable that can still have its say, despite the more than twenty years since its release

Cons: I would say none, too bad for the firmware not upgradable and the menu without Italian language

Opinion: My first DSLR was the D70 which came out two years after the D100 and cost exactly half as much as the D100. Shutter speed 1/4000 sec. and flash sync 1/250sec, lower than those of the D70, which reaches 1/8000 and sync at 1/500. Both 6 MP CCD sensor, but in the D100 the Raw is almost 10Mp, against the 6Mp of the D70. I found a better feeling than the D70. In those years the evolution of digital grew rapidly but substantially these two sisters are almost the same in terms of image quality. For the rest, CCD sensors have already been mentioned. Today it is found at ridiculously low prices and if you get the opportunity do not miss it, for robustness, reliability and curiosity of a still appreciable past.

Pros: Robustness, image quality, sharpness

Cons: Slow menu navigation, 6 megapixels

Opinion: It was my first digital SLR. Bought used, I immediately appreciated the image quality, colors and sharpness. I had a very good feeling with the camera body and the position of its controls. The machine is sturdy and this affects the weight a bit. Compared to newer cameras the limits emerge, but it is a camera of substance. What I have always not tolerated in the D100 are its 6 megapixels because, producing beautiful photos, I have always regretted not having the original larger file for larger format prints.
